Out shopping today I was thinking about how different shopping was years ago.  People were dressed, not in their PJs.  Sales people were always available to help with questions or sizes.  Department stores provided a box with your purchase and free gift wrapping or wrapping for a minimum charge.  Some stores had coat checks.  We even had a store shuttle bus that would drive you to your car in the parking lot.  Now people are home in their PJs shopping on line with fingers crossed their packages will be delivered on time.  I think we were spoiled and didn't even know it at the time.

@Biftu   Shopping was definitely different years ago.  I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and have many fond memories of traveling into town with my family during the Christmas Season.  There were no malls and no Internet.  People in town were happy and kind and enjoyed the socialization.  It was an adventure...Stores were packed and people were dressed for the season...enjoying the moment.  It wasn't about how much money you could spend.  Definitely no one in PJs...

Today is much different...everyone seems to be in a hurry rather than enjoying the moment.
 Yes...we were spoiled...with lifelong memories.

For some nostalgic shopping from days of yore.....You Tube has LOTS of videos taken of shoppers at Kmart, Sears, Penney's etc from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.....just put in your favorite store....

People must've used early video tape equipment....there are lots of them on there...

Things to note....civility of the people in the store, people are dressed in clothes, not pajamas, there are few overweight people, and there's music playing in the store.....cars in the parking lots...( I've started taking photos of cars in parking lots...we think nothing of them today...but think how fun to look back and say..."we owned one of them!!!"....

Lots of the videos have prices too....and examples of the things we used to buy in "those days"...

Take a trip down memory lane.....I did one night, and it was fun and sad at the same time ( I'm 67 and remember Penneys, Sears, Kmart,Jamesway, Korvettes, Woolworths, etc from days gone by....)...

"there are few overweight people" seems unkind and particularly uncharitable at Christmas.

As a kid I loved the big Woolworth's next to the movie theatre in a big town near where I grew up.

My home town had a tiny "Newberry" dime store, but this Woolworth was palatial. All us kids had been instructed by our Mom that she did not require any more "Evening in Paris" cologne!  She did like handkerchiefs and sewing accessories. The store smelled wonderful due to the smell of popcorn, and the luncheonette, which had great grilled cheese sandwiches, which I think cost 40 cents--well under a dollar, anyway.

People flocked to these stores for "Christmas Corsages," worn on the coat,

and silk squares, cosmetics, and toys.  Very glittzy it seemed to me!

Back then, people didn't consider shopping to be entertainment. They only shopped when they needed something, not wanted something.

And my parents thought that it would reflect negatively on them if my siblings and I went out in public looking like a slob.

Didn't mean it as mean...it's just a commentary on how society has changed.....I've struggled with weight all my life, and a lot of it has to do with the change in eating habits and the foods we eat....

Sheeesh...not everything is an INSULT.

Chill out people.

Yes, it's true that society is getting more overweight for sure....definitely a fair observation.

Thank you....if you watch the videos on You Tube from the 1970s-1980s at various stores that were in malls or strips, the cars in the parking lots are different than today's cars too..

Eveyrthing changes.....it was just an observation.

Enjoy the shopping videos...they will bring back many memories if you shopped at that time....

Well, I did go to the malls for entertainment.  It was a night out.  In the '80s DH and I used to go to a local mall on a Saturday night and go "a malling"!!  Certainly don't watch the shopping channels for "entertainment."

I do agree that we dressed decently to go out--never any rips in clothing or sloppy looking outfits.  I very much miss those days.

Thank you for explaining you didn't mean it to be insulting.

It was still unkind.
