loopy, I love your family story. When some of my ancestors came they landed in Fla. They saw that a war (civil) was taking place and thought that it was their duty to sign up. They realized they had joined the wrong side and were able to buy their way out and come west.

The corned beef really comes from the Jews. The Irish came over and settled in the jewish neighborhoods, where they shared recipes.
