Since some of you are under the impression that bank employees are just charging fees and making big bucks without any concern for the client. Are you aware that if a bank employee has a discrepancy in their personal account just like a consumer will be charged a fee? Not only that they get written up. If it occurs again a fee will be put in and again this could be because the employee just like the consumer is short. They all don't make a ton of money but have bills. If it happens a third time the fee is doubled and they are terminated.

Again the bank is a business the consumer needs to be cognizant of where the money is and what is happening. But to just ignore or not get to know the people who are safe guarding your funds is going to hurt you in the long run. All banks and CU charge fees. Just like CC if you are late in paying or do not pay the full balance on your card.

Banks are a business and certain fees are understandable. Got notice recently, however, that if I write a physical check or produce one on line to someone and they try to cash at my bank without an account there they are charged fee of $30. They have access to see if check is good or not. Is it taking too much employee effort to cash a check? Customer service is a thing of past. Used to enjoy going to my local bank and seeing regular employees who treated me as someone special. This is one of those things from the past that regret is gone. Why do they bother dressing with ties when they are not there for customer?

Don't forget that Banks are regulated by Laws passed by legislators that get political donations from the Banks. How cozy is that!

If you think a Banking practice is unfair don't call the bank, call you senator or congress person.

Wow. Ok so the person who you wrote the check to went to cash it at your bank. They do not have an account at your bank and you are not a business with a business account and a written agreement with the bank to have people cash checks on you?

That said the person went to your bank cashed a check against your account instead of using their own account. The bank looks at this as money laundering. They question why this person didn't cash the check against their own account. Are they not wanting to show funds in their own account? A lot of red flags go off at what you consider poor customer service.

Maybe if there were not so many fraudulent consumers banks would not have to be so strict. But there are.

So because the bank was safe guarding against money laundering and keeping your account safe you take that as poor customer service and attire is false because they some how are not bowing when you walk in the door?

Bank employees are there to safe guard your money and the bank as a whole. They (the bank) can charge a fee on a transaction if the person does not have an account. They don't know who the non customer is. It isn't about not making an effort.

I am amazed in this day and age of scams and fraud that the consumer has no idea how much training the bank employee goes through that they look down on.

Do you do that when you go to Walmart? Or to buy Gas? Car Insurance, Health Insurance? Or the Supermarket? Or when you pay your local taxes? Or is it just the bank that is the big meanie?

I use a credit union, so no fees ever!!  I can understand if someone hasn't used an account that they are contacted about a small fee for non use.  That way you can either close the account or add or remove small amounts now and then.  After working at a bank years ago many people forget they even had the account and have changed their address.  What a pain to try to locate them.

That's why I have an online savings account. I'm not going to recommend one financial institution over another. But go to bankrate.com to compare banks with the highest interest rates and terms.

Caravaggio: you make a valid point and have a viewpoint I did not see. Yes, consumer fraud is rampant and we need all safeguards we can get to protect our valuables. I was simply thinking small : thinking of giving granddaughter check for birthday and taking it to bank to cash and having to pay possibly more for fee than check amount. Thanks for pointing out purpose of THIS fee.

@AngusandBuddhasMom

I totally agree.

I scratch my head why The Public purchases a product/service,

then continues to complain about said product/service

while year after year, continues to buy said product/service.

If the Bank is evil, just stick your $ in a shoebox or mattress.

Boom.

Done.

No fees.

@Twins Mom I believe if you were able to go with your granddaughter they would have been able to cash it as long as you signed the back of the check as well. I am Sorry you had to go through this.
