Re: Serena Williams/US Open

[ Edited ]

Serena has a history of doing something when she is losing. She is being fined but she completely ruined for Oksana. Shame on her. Rules have been in place and they know them. To say the umpire as many pundits are saying on TV today shouldn't have called it that wrong. If you don't like the rules work to change them but don't expect to change them in the middle of a Grand Slam match.

One more thing, what is the commonality with all these incidents at the US Open? Serena!!  Not linesman, not umpires etc....

@suzyQ3  I don't have any clue how you can think she is a lightening rod.  NO female athlete in history has had the lavish praise and selling power that she has for her amazing career.  She has lived a charmed life in the press.  She has had a life of accolades and magazine covers, and success with clothing lines and in ads--as has had her sister Venus.

She has been forgiven for several very ugly outbusts on court. She's had far more latitude than a lot of other female athletes of high caliber.

I think she's torn between her career and motherhood.  This is starting to carry over into her sport.  Time to call it a day?

Interesting that McEnroe, Connors and Nastase are continually held up as examples of bad sportsmanship in the game.  Although I realize they still play matches today, their career highlights were over 40 years ago.....different era, different game.  I cannot think of any male player in the last few decades that has exhibited continued issues as Serena has on the court.

Just to note, Osaka defeated Serena earlier this year in Miami.

Serena was fined $17,000 by the USTA for 3 violations during a match.

Hopefully, she will be remembered as the great player that she was/is and not the drama on the court.

All enlightened observations Mersha, and I hope the same for her legacy.  Of today's male players, Nick Kyrgios comes the closest to exhibiting disrespectful behavior on the court.

@suzyQ3

My sports radio guys are always talking about this.

They say it shouldn’t be characterized by ‘female’.

She is the best tennis player in history.

In fact several say (and remember these are sportsy-sports dudes)

she & LeBron are 1a and 1b of ‘Greatest Of All Time’ athletes

in history.

I agree.

@sidsmom, the only reason I used the "female" qualifier is that tennis is divided by gender. If it were not and she had the same record against both men and women, I would not have qualified my statement. Hope that makes sense.

Deep, good call on Nick.  Hopefully, with a bit more experience and maturity, he will get his act together.

What is  your call on the DelPo/Nole match?  I am really looking forward to that one.

@Mersha  Tough call on today's men's final, both are on their game.  I am pulling for DelPo only because he has had such difficult physical setbacks in his career. But Nole appears to be dealing with whatever emotional demons had beset his game the past few years. It is good to see both athletes back on the court and playing with a vengeance.

Can't believe the ppl who are blaming this on PPS. She should have known this can come with pregnancy. Nobody made her have this baby, it was her choice. Anybody knows after having a baby, rarely are you as good a sportswoman as you were before. Also, there's that little thing called, "AGE."

History will look better on her if she gracefully retires, she's losing her fans by her behavior.
