I think that was against Kim Clijsters at the U.S. Open, Serena kind of imploded over a call and threatened the umpire. She said I want to kill you. That umpire (a lineman) complained to the head umpire. And Serena freaked out. They gave the game to Kim who ended up Champion. I think was back in 2009. they were severe to Serena. She got fined $175,000.00 for that. To tell you the truth, I don't think Serena will get fined for what she did today.

I also think this is a perfect example of behavior by the men being chalked up to fierce competitorship and the heat of competition, as opposed to a female competitor who is supposed to be a little lady in competition at all times. The men get and have always had a pass, while the women haven't. Chris Evert was calledd the ice queen because she showed NO emotion. Rosie Casals, not so much. We all knew when Martina was upset. Serena competes like a man. So did Martina. Each temperament is different. Yet Serena is always the one who is expected to "get in line and control it." I believe that the hardest person on Serena in the long run is Serena. She always gives it her all, and her frustrations come out in times when her all is just not working. I'm sure John MacEnroe, Jimmy Connors, and Illie Nastase understand perfectly where she is coming from.
You said it perfectly.
I concur!!!

I no longer have any respect for her. Shame on her. I will never watch her again.

My take? Yes, unprofessional but she DID say she didn't want this to take away from the win for her opponent.
Isn't is odd how so many are so quick to drag her around yet those spoiled males who acted far worse get a pass.
I like Serena.

@songbird- yep, that was it, thanks!

@@songbird I remember that incident. She said to an umpire that she wanted to kill her. Surprised she wasn't banned after that. And some complain about the men swearing... What is worse???

Sometimes you just have to put your big girl pants on and deal. If you can't be a good example, you'll end up being a terrible warning. Serena was embarrassing and owes the ump, the fans and, most importantly, Osaka a big apology.
It was a well deserved win by Osaka. Maybe she learned that your idols sometimes have clay feet.

Yes, he certainly did. The umpire chose to not let it go as it was rather blatant. As soon as he did it, Serena did just what he signaled her to do...go to net. The announcers even acknowledged it.
Serena knew she had a warning and if she smashed her racquet it would be a point penalty. She started on the umpire with the verbal attack at that point and continued on with it.
I found it incredibly unprofessional for her to stand on the court crying/whining to Brian Earley, the tournament referee.
Osaka played a wonderful 2 week tournament and an outstanding final. I am not sure how she concentrated on the matchl with all of the drama swirling around her. Kudos to her.
.....waving "hi" to Deep!
Just what you said in the first paragraph.....she DID do what her coach said...and C. Evert even said it ...so don't tell me she "didn't even see him"...give her the sign...that is not true....and even on the court as you said crying/whining to Brian Earley...if you noticed...there was not ONE tear coming out of her eyes...just her squinting
and whining............she KNOWS the coaching is a violation (and i have heard plenty of men get warned) she knows that throwing a racquet is a violation (as she has been warned on that in past years) AND just because she cames she and the umpire understood eachother i guess she figured he would look the other way when the next violation occured............she not only called him a theif ...she said he HAD to apologize to the stadium and her and she tried her best "bully" attitude towards him.....thank goodness he didn't back down...i just feel bad that the Tennis Organization didn't present him with the usual award for overseeing the tennis match...she prob
LOVED that....the best was at the news conference afterwards she started claiming she was doing it for "womens rights"...omg....and yes i have heard men players curse...BUT they were warned just like her.....and they had the sense NOT to make any more penalties....
She will put a victim spin on this once she hears alot of people's outrage...........and the sad part is ...people will fall for it instead of accepting what it really was "her own
bad behavior"............it just blew her mind that she would ever lose....what an ego. And tired of hearing Chrissy Evert make excuses for her........SHE IS FAR FROM THE VICTIM HERE...........the umpire and Osaka are the victims.....

For the "entitled one" to have made Osaka cry is so selfish and mean. Serena is a bully. Then she throws the gender card? She needs to go away. Of course, she was cheating!
