Re: Sending a check thru the mail

@Kalli  - If you must mail a check, go to the post office and mail it with a tracking number.

You can also go to your bank and initiate a wire.

Cash App is much easier.

Re: Sending a check thru the mail

I read a few articles stating that a lot of thefts are done inside the Post Office.

@Venezia Don't put them in those blue outside boxes either unless it's during the day AT a post office.  There have been a number of thefts of mail carriers for their keys!!!!!

You can read about it online, and my mail carrier told me about it.  One of them was robbed at gunpoint in my town for those keys!

Why not send Priority Mail in their envelope w/tracking?

UPS, FedEx offers similar services too but higher prices.

I recommend the same.

Re: Sending a check thru the mail

I pay all my bills through the mail every month for decades so sending a check once a year for the holidays does not bother me.  My family always lets me know when it arrives.

why worry about this? When there are a number of safer ways to gift money. I use Zelle and Cashapp. There are others. I've never had any problem and the money appears in the recipients account almost instantly.

@smoochy

Why not Paypal?

that's why I said there are others besides Zelle and cashapp. PayPal is also a safe easy option

I always mail checks inside the post office.  And I always use Uniball Signo pens who are supposed to be impervious to "washing".

[ Edited ]

I have auto bill pay on my checking account.  I just enter the person to whom I want to send money as a payee and fill in the amount.  The bank then sends that person a check.  Takes about 5 seconds to do.

I haven't paid a bill by check for years.  Can't imagine why people still do this.  I've never had one go astray and the savings in postage is significant plus I always hated having to sit down and pay bills.

I've done this often but this year I find myself hesitant to do so.There are so many news features and articles of folks who have stuff stolen in transit. And according to the USPS some crooks will "wash" checks to alter the name and amount on the check. To prevent this the postal service recommends using a gel pen.

My son lives far away. Due to covering some holiday shifts at work he can't make it home for Christmas. We wanted to send him a monetary gift.

If you still send checks through the mail, what do you do to keep them safe?

@Kalli @I use the gel pen made by Uniball. It's called Uniball 207. Amazon has a set of four and they have smaller sets and larger sets.

Re: Sending a check thru the mail

you have to be careful with the visa type gift cards , some will take a fee out every month until it's used up . l gave my granddaughter a $50 one , she spent less than $20 on it and didn't use it for a number of months and when she went to use the rest it was all gone !
