Sen. John W. Warner of Virginia (and One of Liz's Husbands) Has Died at 94

[ Edited ]

(Excerpted from The Washington Post)

John W. Warner, the five-term U.S. senator from Virginia who helped plan the nation’s 1976 Bicentennial celebrations, played a central role in military affairs and gained respect on both sides of the political aisle for his diligence, consensus-building and independence, died May 24 at his home in Alexandria, Va. He was 94.

His former chief of staff Susan Magill announced the death and said the cause was a heart ailment.

Because of his willingness to buck his increasingly conservative party, Mr. Warner became the Republican whom many Virginia independents and Democrats respected and voted for. By the time he retired in 2009, he held the second-longest tenure of any Virginia senator.

As a former secretary of the Navy and, in later years, one of only a handful of World War II veterans in the U.S. Senate, Mr. Warner held considerable authority to military matters. His consensus-building on a number of critical issues led him to be known as one of the Senate’s more influential members. He also brought a touch of glamour to the political world through his six-year marriage to film star Elizabeth Taylor.

I liked the guy and was delighted to see him and Liz Taylor when they attended a concert at Wolf Trap.

I remember John Warner, but only because of his connection to Elizabeth Taylor.  That was a big deal back in the day, but of course it did not last very long.  She certainly did bring the glamour to DC for a time, that's for sure.

He outlived Elizabeth by a number of years and appears to have led a full life.  I hope he went peacefully and Godspeed to him.

You must be talking about the NY metro area.
