Hello Friends,
Well, it has finally happened. My local GFS (Gordon food service) has shut down the self service lanes and will be going back to the traditional check out lanes. The Manager said the remodel will taking place soon.
I asked why and he said it was super expensive to keep the self serve. He stated that they had to hire additional staff to monitor the transactions and cut down on theft. He told me He had horror stories of what people were stealing from the store. He also said that he could use that additional man power else where in the store. At this time he will not be losing any staff. I for one am glad. Whenerver I tried to use self serve I always got behind people that didnt know how to use the machines. It would take forever!
We shall see what happens with other vendors.

@Franklinbell, the whole self check-out fiasco is one reason why I shop at Trader Joe's. Happy employees and plenty of check-out staff are always on hand. The stores are small and easily navigated. I don't think I've ever spent more than 15 minutes to do a week's worth of shopping and usually it's closer to 10 minutes. There are negatives to shopping there, too, but the positives outweigh the negatives for me.
I'm happy to see some retailers going back to manned check-outs.

Self-checkout was a good idea, but it has been ruined by those folks who must have thought self-checkout meant you bag your stuff and only ring up a few lesser-priced items. There have been a number of articles in business publications about grocery stores backing away from self-checkout lanes primarily for this reason.
The slowpokes aren't a big problem because most stores have a single file line leading to the registers, so even if someone is slow they are only holding up one register. Some have tried implementing item limits in self-checkout as a means to keep the line moving briskly. That's fair because if a customer has 50 items, they need to be at a regular register with a cashier and bagger. Even if one is fast on the register, it will still take quite a bit of extra time to bag everything.

I'm just the opposite. Only use manned checkout when I do my big shoppping and have a cart full and that's once a month. Every other trip is through the self checkout. I was thrilled that our walmart just remodeled the store and added about 20 additional self checkouts. Took out three manned lanes to make room. Love it!

Hmmmm...at my Kroger, the "live" cashier stands there idle, while the lines are at the self check-out.
At my Target, they had to put up a "10 items only" sign at the self-registers.

Self checkout is very popular here at Wegmans, my DH does all our shopping and only uses self checkout. Except when he goes to Tr Joe.

I never thought about some of these problems, especially putting things in bags without scanning them.
I avoid them when I can, but quite a few stores we go to rely on them. One of our grocery stores has only one regular lane open, and another store has only customer service as an option for "regular" checkout.
I held out as long as I could, because I always struggled with fruits and vegetables. But I finally figured out how to weigh them and find the right code!

Wow, I'm really surprised, because our local huge supermarkets have added more self service checkouts.
Surprising too that anyone can get away with not ringing up items, and then bagging them, because it's all on camera.
