Lack of check-out lines has been an issue long before self-check showed up.

This is spot on. Before self checkout the lines in my Sam's Club and Walmart were 5 deep most of the time.

I will use clerks when I have a large order and self checkout when I don't. I hate standing in long lines when I only have one or two items. IMHO self checkouts seem to be set up for few item purchases, another option for the express line.

Re: Self Checkout - Yea or Nay?

For those of you sneering at those of us who like the human system, perhaps you're fortunate and have never had an illness or condition that would render some of the process of checking your own groceries out, bagging them, etc., difficult and make the whole process discouraging if not demoralizing.

I'm talking about vision problems, balance problems, broken bones, hearing (the ugly beeping), mobility issues, etc., etc. All of those can impair your ability to perform the tasks required in self-checkout.

The stores I shop at have people who can help you to your car and load the groceries if you're having problems. They'll even do that at Walmart. That's how it should be, AFAIC. Allowing for a wide range of likes and dislikes, abilities and disabilities, good days and bad days--that's compassion in action. That's what I want for my custom, dagnabbit.
