I know there are people that just will NEVER EVER use a self checkout.  And the reasons are always the same.  "Taking jobs away" , "They need to pay me for doing their jobs"  "I hate bagging my groceries".  Guess what?  You're not taking jobs away.  The more checkers there are the less stockers there are.  Those checkers when not on the registers are deployed in other areas around the store.  Also jobs are created by the technicians needed to install and repair the self checkout machines.   Things the way they are now, checkers are doing double duty anyway.. The days of checkers just manning the register are long gone.

Pay you?  For what?  Hello...you still need to put the items in your cart onto the belt.  That doesn't change whether you are using the self check out or not. The ONLY thing you are eliminating by going to a manned register is ringing the item yourself.  I like self checkouts since most of the time the cashier is flying the stuff through on the scanner there are chances of missed sale prices since pricing is sometimes not updated.  Your putting the bags in your cart just like self check out.  .

And bagging?  I'd rather bag my own groceries anyway.  Most of the time they mix stuff together, soaps with food, all your can goods in one bag (which winds up ripping).  Frozen foods with regular items, meats with produce.

A recent survey found 46% of people aged 18-34 prefer using self checkouts.  It drops to a mere 19% of aged 55 and older.  Reason?  Technology.  Older people are prone to being intimidated by the register.   I like self checkouts.  Never had a problem with the registers, and almost all produce now have a barcode somewhere on them.  Yes you might need to weigh an item but that's not hard either. And plenty of cashiers get just as stumped by a coupon as does the self serve register.  It's scanning the barcode period.  If the barcode is messed up then the casier will have the same problem with it.   I'd rather they put more people at the deli counter.  I'm forever waiting there.  .

I was responding to @magicmoodz  who suggested a fee for curb pickup.  I know there is no charge now.

Unfortunately, people who are capable of doing their own in store shopping, but would rather sit in their car and have it done for them, brought to and loaded into their car are entitled or lazy or like feeling important, maybe all three.  When too many choose curb, a fee will likely be added.

@occasionalrain, All the grocery stores around here charge a curb pickup fee around 5.99 for each trip except for Walmart grocery. I pay about $99 at Walmart and get free delivery for the year and I pay that for pickup at my other favorite grocery store so that if I forget the milk or something I can run back, get it and not have to pay another 5.99. I get my money's-worth for the year.

Change is always hard. I prefer not using self checkout.....but it is because I am use to having a cashier. Hard to teach an old dog new tricks.... I will just have to get use to it.

I'm confused. Let's look at the 2 scenarios.

I get in my car, drive to my neighborhood Target, do my shopping, go through self-checkout, bag my groceries, load my car and drive home. No interaction is made with a Target employee.

Or, I could easily in my pajamas and on my phone place my order. Someone at the store has to physically access my order, do all my shopping, go through checkout and store my purchases at Customer Service ensuring all refrigerated items are placed in their coolers--all within two hours of my order.

When I arrive at Target I let them know my car make/model and the number of my parking space. An employee must now locate my purchases by order number (in cold weather put on a parka), and load my groceries in my car.

Don't you believe this takes more manpower than had I done everything myself? More manpower of course costs us more in the prices we must pay. That is why I would have no problem paying Target an upcharge for doing what I could easily do myself.

Not clear about the restocking issue--that needs to be done no matter how groceries are purchased and often that is done overnight.

I'm not trying to be contrarian, but I simply don't understand your comments.

Starbucks and Chik Fil A and CVS and your bank use drivethroughs for a reason. They don't charge extra, because it benefits them to serve you, and take your money, without you coming into the storefronts. The fewer people inside the building the better and more efficient it is.

If Walmart and Kroger could sell things without anyone going into the stores, they would.

Humans walking around a storefront have all sorts of needs that need to be catered to (like requiring a restroom that is impeccably maintained by staff) and they create all sorts of problems (like leaving carts around, budding in line, fighting with each other, shoplifting, soiling the floors, and misplacing the stocks) that can be avoided if you can get them to just stay in their cars.

Curbside service is a cheaper version of a drivethrough for places that don't want to invest in creating drive up window infrastructure. Checkout is done ahead of time online by the customer. There is no self checkout line to account for. If the customer has a problem checking out online, the store does not have to employ anyone to help them.

Before everyone had an internet enabled cellphone, curbside service and in store pickup were not practical. Now they are, so we will see more and more of it.

I appreciate interacting with you about this in a civil way. Thank you for that, genuinely.

@Porcelain ...........Yes pickup does cost extra.  You dont think for one minute they are doing it out of the kindness of their heart?  We all pay more because they raise the prices to cover it.

Picking up groceries has an extra charge added by my local grocery.  I am thankful that I have that option to pickup, but I wish they didn't add that fee.

@Imaoldhippie We have self service and full service where I am and the difference in price is about 5-10 cents per gallon. In NJ, it is only full service. Jesey girls don't pump gas! LOL
