@Imaoldhippie wrote:@Porcelain ...........Yes pickup does cost extra. You dont think for one minute they are doing it out of the kindness of their heart? We all pay more because they raise the prices to cover it.
@Imaoldhippie Exactly. Pickup does cost in my area with our grocery chain. It depends upon the time of day you schedule your pickup.
Anytime after 2:00 is free. Before that it varies by hours. The earlier in the day, the higher the fee.
There is also disclosure that some items may have a higher price; not all items but for some if ordered online.
People are making too many general statements; how all stores in all areas handle pick-up varies.

Drive through at banks and fast food are not comparable to grocery stores. There is not impulse buying at a bank, and at fast food, relatively minor. Companies like PepsiCo pay for shelf space, pay for end cap displays, pay for free standing displays. Large companies squeeze out smaller ones by buying up shelf space that small ones can't afford. No different from Walmart driving local stores out of business.

@occasionalrain Drive through at banks, pharmacies, fast food-often based on available parking space, too.
Many are not self-standing with a large parking lot designated just for the particular business.
The drive throughs allow for the customers of other businesses in the same locale to be able to have parking when there is no drive through.

That's pretty cool that my comments have generated so much conversation. Please keep it up. It's good for the forum.
My local stores don't charge me anything to pick up orders that I place online. Some have minimum order amounts, but that's not an issue for me with the way I shop. If I just want one little thing, I'll run into the store to get it like anyone else.
I must be really lucky here to be able to enjoy all these benefits with maximum flexibility. Sometimes I go into Starbucks and sometimes I use the drivethrough. Sometimes I go into my bank but usually I use the drivethrough. Sometimes I go into Kroger, but usually I use Pickup.
It's not a zero sum game. Anyone who tries to turn a topic like this one into a black and white either/or issue is not being intellectually honest and is only arguing for the sake of arguing.
I think it's great that some of you guys love shopping for full carts of items in person. I am glad you are not being denied that. However, you are being denied the ability to have your groceries scanned and bagged for you. More work for you now and into the future unless you switch to a premium full service grocery store, assuming you have one in your location.
As automation increases, prepare for more changes. There will be more and more things you will have to do using your phone or computer, or learn to live without. That's life. Some of us will appreciate it and some won't. We have no say over it: big corporations do. They know we will still need groceries no matter what they do.

@Porcelain Your comments have nothing to do with how this thread is going; considering your remarks on the Chicago thread managed to get that one taken down.
Because some disagreed with you, the posts disappeard and then the thread.
Have a nice day.

You're reacting to my posts right here. Clearly I am influencing you greatly without even trying. You care a lot about what I have to say to others about drivethroughs, of all topics. Somehow even the topic of grocery shopping has triggered your resentments toward me. I hope I am an exception in your life and that no one else you encounter triggers you this easily or this consistently.
The way I see it, passionate --yet civil-- discussion is a good thing as long as our passion remains civil. When it comes to my posts, sometimes I think your passion overrides your civility. That is regrettable yet understandable considering how much weight and attention you appear to give my thoughts.
I'm not reporting your post. But I do think you wrote it intending to start an argument with me. I hope it remains so you can feel a little better.

When one resorts to personal attacks they have lost the argument, and know it.

Our area has more and more self checkouts. I have written to many of these grocery stores asking them kindly to consider that not all of us are liking them or able to use them without great effort. My feeling is they need to consider the entire process and give us choices. For instance, produce... spend more than 5 minutes trying to get a price for one unmarked cucumber. Trying to get credit for sales and reward points. Simply trying to scan anything with expertise.
I can only imagine either by mistake or deliverate theft how much money THEY will lose.

I don't mind self check out lanes, in fact I prefer them. Like others have mentioned, I can pack the grocery bags the way I want to and I can check my prices better, too.
As far as doing my own shopping, I prefer that, too. I realize some don't want to because of Covid or not physically able to anymore or for many other reasons. I like to see the actual item I'm buying. I check the expiration dates. I compare sizes, prices, ingredients, etc. I like to thump my own melons and squeeze the Charmin. 🍈🚽
