@Mz iMac : We have such a shortage of employees at our grocery stores that many times it is better to use self-check out. At one time Hubbs would not use self check-out said he wouldn't do the stores job,but now we do.

I fought and fought self-check out as my thoughts were --- well, I am paying a lot of money for things and why should I have to check out my own things? And secondly, I felt this was taking jobs away from people! As time progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to get a real live person to check you out, so I have found it necessary to use self-check out quite often!
Case in point --- I try to go to Walmart as early in the day as possible because there are much less people. However, it is usually still quite busy. They usually have ONE actual live cashier! Then, I go looking for the self-check outs with the long conveyor belts because I usually have very large orders -- and they have all of those blocked off and out of service! So -- you are forced to use the self-check outs with the very small conveyor belts, which is so much harder and takes way longer! Very frustrating!
If I go to Target or other food stores, if regular cashiers are available, I will use them. If the lines are too long, I will use self-check outs.
I do believe in the not too distant future all the stores will use ALL self-check outs! Just like with most things in life --- they force things on you and take away your choices!

I hate to wait, so I love self check out. At first I worried about taking away jobs, but now that it is so difficult to find workers, I don't worry about that any more. I do most of my shopping at Walmart and they have put in more and more self check out stations, so now I very rarely have to wait.
Many of the comments here sound snobby; like people are too good to have to do the job of a checker, like they deserve to be served. Well, then you can wait in long lines and let someone serve you. It drives me nuts to wait in line while the checker chit chats with people and slowly scans items. Ugh.

I don't work for the grocery store, Walmart, etc so why should I do their work? It certainly doesn't reduce prices of their products. Leave it to big business to find a way more ways to increase profits while doing nothing for customers and employees.

First of all...I can't speak for any other store but Wal-Mart, but when WM first started going to mostly self-checkout, a cashier who had been there for years said no one was losing jobs by the decision. She said that in fact, they actually need more workers with the self-checkouts, because more and more people are using the free grocery pick-up option, and they need pickers (as they're called) as well as associates to bring out the groceries.
I have used the free grocery pickup option for two years now and couldn't be happier. It is a GREAT service. For things WM doesn't carry, is out of, or I prefer to buy elsewhere (meat, most produce), I go to a couple of locally owned grocery stores. One of those has self-checkout, and I always use it, because I only have one or two items, and there is always a line at the manned checkouts.
Our Costco has several manned checkouts, but there are always huge lines. I use the self-checkout, because I can get it done much faster than waiting in line, and I don't mind. I figure the bending over and lifting are good for me. Unless a person has a cart-full of items, self-checkout is the way to go.

I do not use the Self-Checkout and prefer not to, my hubby uses it because he is impatient and of course he doesn't do the whole week's grocery shopping like I do.

I don't like self check-out unless I have one or two items and the lines are long.

Will join you in saying NEVER have I used any self checkout ,do a lot of online orders, since pandemic started, also like that packages come right to my door. But when I go to my local CVS always have to ring the bell for service as there is never a cashier behind counter due to the self checkout, they do come always say to them sorry just not use to that new gadget you have over there, they laugh and I feel if I didn't use cashier they would maybe be out a job eventually, and I do use cash still in CVS.
Call me old fashioned or outdated.

@4kitties Totally agree. I can bag the way I want to unload my groceries. I really hate to put my groceries away, I don't mind the shopping or check out. It makes it much easier when I know which bags must be unloaded first, frozen and cold items. And I don't know, but as a kid I loved playing "check out". Haha, I almost enjoy it.

Bookplate ever think the store cannot get cashiers because they pay peanuts and they have tried to hire? Money talks period.
