For some reason, I thought you were talking about Scott Pelley, the news anchor.

No, that's Mark Kelly who is married to Gabby Giffords, the former Congresswoman from Arizona.

Here's a picture of Mark Kelly and Scott Kelly (identical twins), both astronauts:

I would take a well-stocked Kindle and a good personal camera if allowed, to make a personal record of the trip.

I think these folks are pioneers and heroes, and are very likely to help find medical breakthroughs due to the study of their bone-loss in zero g.

I got so confused when I first saw this story on tv. I didn't know he had a twin brother lol.

People who do this have a passion for it. It is something that has been a life long goal. People who climb mountains, race cars, astronauts etc... have a different type of make up than a lot of people and their lives would not be complete unless they were testing and pushing themselves. It makes them feel alive. I am not like that but I know people who are and I would never want to put limits on what they could do. Now I wouldn't want to marry or raise a family with someone like that but I am fairly certain the spouses of these people knew exactly what they were in for. Where would we be as a civilization if it weren't for these risk takers?

You said just what I was going to post. This type of person/ality has a drive and passion to do these things, and they know it about themselves early on. I would not think it's something they can hide from a potential spouse, so they wouldn't be springing it as a surprise ;-) As for being away from spouse and children for a year, military families do it all the time. It has to be roughest on children because they had no choice or foreknowledge, but military kids survive to adulthood.

Me, I'm very much *not* the physically adventurous type. I would never be interested in testing my physical limits, or the danger involved. It's just not in my makeup. But I admire the people who do - without them we wouldn't know half of what we do.

Maybe if I was single. I don't think I have 'the right stuff'.

I wouldn't do it, so I commend them for their bravery. However, I think its about time we use money to take better care of earth, (and stop living in denial before its too late), instead of having all of these space voyages.
