I'm on Long Island and school is finished here next Friday, June 23rd. This varies by district, but we are all done by that Friday. My own children finish a day before I do.
Most districts here start their school year right after Labor Day although sometimes the teachers are required to go in a day or two earlier for meetings.
I didn't realize until I became a teacher myself that other states start/finish at different times. I had no idea that some schools began their year in August and ended in May. I found that to be fascinating and I still do. I'm not sure why! lol

I'm in Pennsylvania. In my area, the last day of school was June 9th. The first day for the upcoming school year will be August 22nd.
It seems like they have shorter time off in Summer but longer time off during the school year for different things.

Miami Dade County Public Schools: 2023-2024
Teachers report August 14, students August 17
Schools out for students June 6, teachers June 7.
The opening and closing has gotten earlier over the 44 years that I taught. In 1974, we started after Labor Day. I was at Coconut Grove Elementary - kindergarten! - NO AC!!!!!
I was young!!!
Retired 2019. So happy!

@mormel20 wrote:The graduation thread on this site made me think of this topic. I live in Georgia on the outskirts of Atlanta. Here, the last day of school was May 26th and school goes back August 1st (yes, you read that correctly, goes back August 1st). Here this has been the norm for a good many years. When I saw the thread about graduation here in the middle of June it made me think about this, since our school have been out since May 26. I would be curious to hear what school schedules other areas of the country has. Please comment and include what State you are in.
I am not sure when all these different dates started. In Reno I know at least 3 different dates for last day of school for different schools. The last few days kids were watching movies. I went to school in Southern Calif. We always started the Tues. after Labor Day and I believe the 2nd week of June was the start of our summer vacation. I have no idea how they decide all the different dates and not sure why schools are suppose to be entertaining. Also kids are out early every weds not sure what that is all about. And on early release days there are no after school programs. They really act like every home has a stay at home parent to jump through hoops for all of these off days.

The grandkids last day of school was June 14th this year. Living in CT, it all depends on how many snow days the kids have as to when the school year ends.
When I was in 6th grade, I can remember going to school for two Saturday's to make up snow days we had so many. Some law, don't know just for CT or not, but the end of the school year has to be by a certain date.

Every district in Texas has its own start and ending dates, so it varies widely. Because the state requires a specific number of instructional days, and because they have added a ridiculous number of breaks during the year, the starting dates are earlier and the ending dates are later for most districts. 180 instructional days is a required for an academic year. My contract was always 215 days so the myth of three month vacations for teachers was just that...a myth.
