State law in Michigan prohibits public schools from starting until the day after Labor Day, but just about every district that I know of has gotten a waiver to start earlier. The public schools in my county start 8/26.

My grandbabies start school August 1st in Biloxi, MS.  I swear next year, it's going to be in July!

I loved the fact that we got out in June and never started till after Labor Day.  I would've hated the fact that my birthday would be a school day.  Out of the five of us kids, everybody's birthdays were in the summer months.

Two of my 3 kid's birthdays were summer vacation time.  The one in the fall, I said he could take the day off from school if he wanted.  He never did. 

But I did let them all agree on a *skip* day every year and we enjoyed the heck out of that!

We are in PA. School begins Wednesday, August 21.

Our local school district (SW PA) doesn't start until 9/3.  Though the teachers start a week earlier.
