My choice is uniforms.

Why aren't headbands allowed though?

Gang related? Like hoodies?

Headbands are gang related?

Bandanas and some headbands are gang colors...like the hoodies.

Instead of determining which are gang related and which are OK fashion statements - they just ban them all. Even SHOELACES can show gang colors!

Many schools are adopting uniforms, especially in urban districts. Wish they did it here in suburbia. Saves time in getting dressed and takes away distractions. (Who's wearing what brand?)

There's a certain pride in being recognized as a scholar.

Does this school have a gang problem? I'm just curious.

My youngest always wore pretty headbands to grade school. They were banned. Girls could no longer wear their hair in a pony tail either. When I went in to talk to the assistant principal to find out why they were no longer able to wear their hair in a pony tail and headbands weren't allowed, she told me that headbands were a distraction. If someone was sitting next to a girl that had a pretty headband, they would look at that little girl with envy possibly and want to "covet" that headband. I honestly shook my head and walked out thinking this was going to be a long year.

Ir's the suburban schools here where boys are getting in trouble for wearing T shirts with assault rifles on them.

At one school, the parents lead a protest march for the boy...saying it's his 1st & Second Amendment right to make a statement on his shirt. He was suspended after the 3rd infraction. That shirt said - "I'm Protected by Smith & Wes son."

Uniforms would solve all these issues!!!!Whether in city or suburbs.

Wow...I'm sure there's a no smoking rule, as week, yes? Everyone knows about dress codes...it's no secret before school.

Parents become a Defense Attorney for their kid...I'm sure the parents are just as wheel's off as the kids.

Prime example of what they think is acceptable (...and I thought is was too hot??):

I would never let my daughter walk out of the house wearing this get up, let alone go to school.

I've seen this story in the newspapers and on the local news so I went to the school website to see the dress ode for myself. It wouldn't let me copy and paste but it was pretty reasonable. No headbands, hats or hoods. They can wear a hoodie with the hood down. No underwear visible, no low cut shirts, tank tops, midriff tops or halters. No short shorts or micro mini skirts. Length must be at least fingertip length of a relaxed arm. No offensive slogans, pictures or words on shirts. No metal spiked jewelry, no wallets with chains, no picks or combs in hair, no earphones or earplugs and no electronic devices or phones. Understand that this school is in a neighborhood where Mob Wives are considered role models. Big Ang is a local hero.

The rest of the school looks pretty tame. Band members look nice. Cheerleaders are respectable. Girls softball & boys golf team look conservative. Just a few bad apples to ruining it for everyone.

Yikes. My daughter wouldn't even give that outfit a thought. Not her style. Thank Goodness.

Mine wouldn't either. They have always dressed appropriately.

So if a school requires a uniform, are there those who don't wear it? If you have defiant kids (and parents it seems) who won't follow a dress code, what makes them wear the uniform.
