The Villages program at my first glance looked wonderful and maybe it is but it bothers me that it has become a huge marketing business endeavor with fairly high fees to set up and be connected the the main program. Once you've started that ball rolling, then a business plan is needed, marketing strategies, fund raising . . .

I never did see what fees are paid by those receiving services. The only "free" work is from volunteers with some programs having paid staff with the expense of offices and all that goes into running an office.

Seems a good idea has gone funding intensive instead of care intensive. But I could be wrong because it surely has taken off and spread across the nation.

I think it was $675 for individual and $975 for couple.

$675 to $975 for what ? A day - a week - a month - ???????? And what care does this provide - bathing, taking care of bedbound patients? Incontinent patients? confused patients? Ill patients? Is it 24 hour care or just a aide dropping by every day or every few days? Administering meds? Doing dressings?

I believe those are yearly fees. I have also read where there is a sliding scale based on income. The Villages concept is not for those needing assisted living type care. It is for people who are still mobile, can live in their own home and take care of their personal needs. However, they may need help doing some things around the house, like heavier cleaning or repairs. Or, they may not be able or want to drive, so there are people who will go grocery shopping with them, take them to appts, etc. My mom used to do this type of work.. Housecleaning, running errands, even some light cooking and meal.prep. Also, the Village concept provides social activities. People form groups based on interests like going to the theater, museums, concerts. Sports events, etc. It's not for people who are sick and need in.home or skilled care. It's for people who are still relatively healthy, but need extra help. This way they can still stay in their own homes, be independent, and have support when they need it.

Marien, thank you for explaining it so well. You're a doll! Smile
