Emails are another issue. Especially when they come with attachments.
Open those attachments and they are now in.

Even just reading without opening the attachment can be an issue.

It's beyond just an annoyance. Sophisticated methods, selling information for
money even if the seller scammed no $ other than hacking, AI, all of this has seriously shrunk our privacy and security.

Re: Scammed‼️

[ Edited ]

@LTT1 Yes, this is an obvious scam, but word to the wise, don't ever answer a number you don't recognize. If it's important, they can leave a message and then you can decide. Secondly, while it may seem fun to mess with a scammer in this way, never tell them you are an old lady living alone, or give them any information about you at all. Also, bits can be taken from your replies in the conversation and used against you. For example, you are asked a question that requires a response of "yes" they can then clip the conversation and say you agreed to something by saying "yes" and you will have no idea what it is you agreed to or how it could be used against you. Criminals are more saavy today than ever, and they now have access to AI making it all the more dangerous. Let common sense be your guide, and don't answer any calls you don't recognize, then you don't need to ever wonder if you got scammed.

@LTT1 , glad you didn't get scammed!

I don't waste ten seconds if it's not someone I know. I don't say a word, just hang up.

I am sorry you had to go through this @LTT1 .

My DH always claimed he would never be scammed.

One day, years ago, he saw a notice covering his computer screen that seemed to lock his computer. To fix this, the message advised him to call a particular number.

When I overheard him on the phone with his credit card in hand, I begged him to not give any info and hang up the phone. I said, it's a scam!  He ignored me and put the required amount on his credit card to fix the problem.

It was very upsetting, and we ended up getting a new computer.

@LTT1  I received the same call, but I didn't answer it. The scammer left a message about a Play Station, and I deleted it & blocked the #.

I never answer my phone unless I know the caller.

I'm glad they didn't get your $.

@LTT1.  Did the scammed ask for anything or want you to do something?  I'm trying to figure out what was the purpose of the call?

I'd call the police and report it.  Perhaps they'd have insight into what's going on.   They know about the latest scams.

As others have suggested, I never answer the phone if I don't recognize the number.

As others here do,  unless I know the phone number showing up I do not answer. They can leave a message if important, then I can answer.  I also do not open emails from sources I do not know or did not contact/purchase from.  They get deleted/trashed without opening them.  Sad state of affairs that we all have to be so vigilant.

@LTT1  You stated that they got nothing from you in the phone call....they did, they got your voice. Keep a close eye on your charge cards and bank accounts.
