Re: Say A Prayer For Special Needs Children

I do feel for the special needs children now.  I also think almost everyone is suffering.

There is no magic about getting to the numbers we need to safely open school.  We need to follow Dr. Fauci's recommendations--all of us--- and the gov needs to get all of us zillions of test kits.

It can be done in 2 months or we can sit on our collective hands for 6 more months.

Re: Say A Prayer For Special Needs Children

@Mominohio  So true!  My grandchildren run the gamut. One grandson was accepted into National Honor Society going into 9th grade, and he was also chosen for marching band. He was so looking forward to high school. I'm not worried about his general education, because his mom is capable and she only works part time, but he has aspirations toward medicine. And, I just think about their neighbors who can't stay home with their children or who can't deal with the online learning. Not good.

PA Mom-mom,

I am sorry to hear of your granddaughter's special challenges and how her education will suffer without having professionals teaching her.  Your poor daughter must be overwhelmed with all her responsibilities.

Of course I will pray for her and all special-needs children.  They, especially, need our help and prayers.

Yes, we need to return to the schools, but we cannot do that while we have COVID-19 infection spreading like wildfire.

On a Linea thread, I posted that a classmate of my son lives in Berlin, Germany, and he reports that life there is now "back to normal."  Yes, there are some masks still being worn but because the infection rate is low, people are acting like their old selves once again.  He said there are fewer people in restaurants, bars, movies, etc., but otherwise, it feels like his previous life there -- the life before COVID-19 struck.

Indeed! Also all the abused children who have no one to look out for them now.

@Lali1  I don't understand about the abused children. Do you mean they live with abusive parents but are ok at school?

Children who are abused don't get noticed when they are home. It's happening. Children often tell the teacher or the teachers sees the signs. Now they are just hidden.

If that is happening at home, do the neighbors and other family members have no responsiblity to report the abuse? Trying to force teachers to become social workers and solve all the worlds problems while actually teaching subjects is far too big a lift.

If you actually want more social workers and to improve Child Protective Services, I'm all for that. All children should be protected from abuse. At least we can all agree on that much. However, I think teachers should teach. Social workers should social work. And parents should parent. And babysitters should babysit. Don't try to make teachers do everything when you don't give them any support and make them buy their own supplies and safety gear anyway.

Many school systems have access to guidance counselors, school social workers, school psychologists and other specialists. When a teacher suspects abuse he or she can refer the matter onward to the appropriate resource. Even in smaller systems where those supports aren't available, there are protocols for how to manage suspected abuse. No one is expecting teachers to perform as CPS workers but they do spend several hours each day with a child and are in a prime position to note potential problems. As for expecting neighbors or other family to report issues, they might or might not be aware of them and they might or might not opt to become involved. It's not a perfect world.

I am a licensed speech language pathologist and in my state I am legally obligated to report abuse.  I could lose my license or face fines or arrest if I don't.  I can share my concerns with those other professionals that you mentioned but I cannot refer the matter onward, I am responsible for making the report myself.

@ninjawife  I understand the reporting, but surely the follow-up and investigation are pursued by others...?

This is something I've been thinking about since they closed schools in the spring.

My cousin just retired at the end of this year, a special education teacher, and I know she was worried about her 'kids'.

Also worried about kids that perform in the lower end of the grade spectrum, not from disability but just do. I'm sure many of them are going to never catch up if they stay out of the classroom much longer.

And while it isn't the same worry as special ed students, I worry that the top performing or very bright children that don't have family to keep them challenged are going to grow bored and loose their excitement being out of their advanced classes and challenges.

What all students have lost just this spring is going to be most likely a huge hurdle to make up/catch up, but a full school year of learning under so many restrictions and changes is not going to be for the better and I feel some of the losses will never be made up.

I agree. I don't have the answer, but what has been passing for 'education'  at every level during this situation isn't, to my mind, adequate. Even under the best of circumstances, education leaves big gaps. One can only imagine the gaps today's students are and will be experiencing.

@PA Mom-mom There really needs to be a plan at whatever level (county, state or federal), as well as funding,  to address the special needs children and those who don't have the resources to do distance learning.  These children should be given priority for in-person learning and money needs to be allocated to make that learning environment safe for the students and the school staff.   I'll say a prayer for your grandchild and all children with special needs.

Re: Say A Prayer For Special Needs Children

On the evening news the other night (do not remember if it was my local station or network)  the estimate for the education loss for students was seven months.  Horrible!

That was a puzzling estimate since there were only two to three months left of the school year for most students.  Perhaps the aggregate of all experiences lost (plus the absence of learning during the summer) equals seven months.  I do not know how seven months was calculated.

@PA Mom-mom  I am praying for your daughter, grandchildren, and for you. I ask the needs of children be provided and they reach their full-potential.
