As I referred to, I myself have been in need as well, in the past, & it was for "heat."
I brought all the required paperwork to the Utility donation sources, & honestly, the requirement was sooo soooo low, I wouldnt have been able to even GET to the source of funds. NO WAY!
And any church, or donation entity I know, (& I've known quite a few) .... *NEVER, EVER* are they the least bit, flush with money. There's ALWAYS, ALWAYS wayyyyy more ppl in true need, than there is money to give to those in need.
Feelings are simply human
How we deal with, ..or express those feelings .. is our choice
. ~ . Please be kind . ~ .

A few dollars isn't going to break us (meaning me and DH).
Yet another back and forth about not knowing what the money is used for and about all the organizations that can help etc. etc. etc.
First, not all organizations are "walk in and get immediate help". Often ID and proof of living circumstances (such as income) is needed.
Walk-in food shelters does not mean everyone is in need, either. When no questions are asked, it is good for those truly in need but sometimes a free meal is a free meal for some who can afford their own. I've seen it back home.
We all know by now since this topic has gone around here for years that the person MAY be an addict, MAY be a scammer, MAY really need help.
Do what you want; don't do what you do not want to do. Just remember to support the organiztions you feel are so easily accessible for everyone.
If one is going to turn away from the person panhandling, it is even more important you pick up the cause and keep your local food banks/shelters/etc. functioning.

Call 911 for what? She's panhandling, that's not illegal. And I just gave an older woman from Portugal some money today. I can usually tell the drunks, druggies and scammers. Sometimes they're the real deal and need help.

@qvcaddition wrote:How sad. An elderly lady had a sign sitting there. The sign said, senior struggling, please help. Never thought in my 86 years, I would see something like this. If I didn,t have my son's giving me help with food and gas, I shudder to think. I know there are others younger in the same situation, but for an old person. I gave her a couple of dollars, all I could spare. I looked for her today with some food, but couldn,t find her.
@qvcaddition She may have been made to move along by the police.
You did what you could do and all kindness has a return.
Good for you; your compassion is a lesson for many.

Call 911 for what, exactly? Someone was asking for help? Really?
@Tinkrbl44 Absolutely if they are impaired, aggressive, or high. The police will take them somewhere to get help. If it is a scam, they will move them along.

Offer to buy groceries or lunch for the person.
If they refuse, you'll know it's a scam.
Call 9-11. The police are trained to assess and take charge of these situations.
Think of some elderly people YOU know who are not bad off. They are old. They look old.
Now put a sign in thier hand, some old clothes, and bingo....scam.
Hate to be so cold, but there are more societal help agencies for elderly than for any other cohort.
Offer to buy groceries. Bet you get turned down.

I don't know where you live but a high school counselor should have talked to this senior about the future.
There are many, many jobs open (grocery stores are begging and pay exceptionally well) and the senior could have gone to the area vocational school for nothing to just above nothing and come out in 2 years making over $70,000 a year in industry.
Something is wrong here.

@ECBG . She is talking about a senior citizen not a high school senior.

@qvcaddition . You did a good deed. If an elderly person is begging I would give what I could. If it is a scam so what? Some are so hardened today to turn away from someone in need because they are afraid they are being taken advantage of. Bless you for caring and helping this lady.
