Saving Parking Spots after Snow Storm

After you go to the trouble of shoveling out your car on the street do you think you should be able to save it?

I do,at least for a little while.

The police say you can't.  But, if I put all that effort into clearing a parking spot and then someone comes along and uses, it where do I put my car?  I end up using a neighbor's spot and then they get mad.  I know it's a public street but there should be an exception in snow storms.

What do you think?

Re: Saving Parking Spots after Snow Storm

I think I'm really glad I don't have this problem, because I'm sure it really is a big problem where parking is all on the street and limited.

I wouldn't be happy to spend the time and effort to dig out and then loose that spot, most likely to someone who didn't do the same work somewhere else, but i suppose it is a public street, and nothing can really be done about it.

Yet another reason I don't live in a big city.

People who live in areas where parking is plentiful and accessible really don't get this.

I have some very nice neighbors a couple doors down from me who have four cars, and spaces for 3 WHEN THERE IS NO SNOW.

When it snows, they have sometimes parked in front of our house, OK by us, but it then means that the plows can't do as good a job in front of our house as they do for other houses on the street. I don't have a solution, but I sure do get why you do what you do, OP.

I live on a side street in a very small town.

It's tacky for people to take these spots IMO.  It happens everywhere not just big cities.   My friend is elderly and not in that great of health, her son comes and shovels them out and cleans up 2 parking spots in front of their house.   The neighbors, who live on a corner no less, will pull into these shoveled spots.  Also they are probably in their 30's.

Re: Saving Parking Spots after Snow Storm

I am happy that I don't have this problem anymore.  I have a garage and driveway.

At one time. I did have to park on the street where i lived.  All of my neighbors had several cars and it was a big problem.  A lot of fighting happened.

One time I moved my car a block over to an empty lot and asked the owner if I could park there for an hour or so until I shoveled the spot in front of my house.  He said yes.

i shoveled out a spot for me and one for my husband who was at work, and walked back to get my car.  When I got back, 5 minutes later, one of my neighbors daughters had parked in the middle of the spot I had just dug out.  I asked her to move forward so that I could park behind her and she said "NO". It is very frustrating, when people behave so badly.

I agree that the street is a public place and chairs, trash cans, boxes and the like should not be placed there to save your spot.  There is no way your community can allow you to hold and save a space.

People should just be civil and do the right thing and not wait for someone to shovel out, then park in that spot. But, I understand that is not gonna happen.

Re: Saving Parking Spots after Snow Storm

I'm on a private street in a small townhouse community.  We aren't supposed to "save" our parking spots.  However, if you looked outside right now, you'd see everything from lawn chairs, traffic cones, trash cans, etc., saving parking spaces.  I paid a lot of money to have my car cleared and the snow around it removed.  I don't feel it's right for someone to use my spot after my investment.  I'd feel exactly the same way had I shoveled it myself.  Being a senior citizen, it was more prudent to pay to have it cleared.

I watched while spots were being cleared.  After 28 inches of snow, that is back-breaking work.  As it is, I'm still clearing my deck, but am doing it in small doses.

I HATE SNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Cat Sad

Re: Saving Parking Spots after Snow Storm

I live in a fairly small town and while most have driveways, there are some houses that don't and they have to park in the street.  I really don't know if they have much of an issue with this but I would be ticked.

@debic, I know exactly what you mean.  It is so frustrating.  We have a young neighbor across the street who is in his late 20's.  His neighbor right next door is 90.  Do you think the young neighbor went over and used his snow blower for the elderly neighbor?  No.

Yes, you cleared it. It is common to save spots where I live.
