Sam's Club membership...grrrr

We joined Sam's Club a couple years ago because one was supposed to be built in our town. Then the economy went south, so the store was put on hold. The closest Sam's is about 90 miles away so we don't go often.

Last year when our basic membership was up for renewal ($40), they offered us a bump-up to a "PLUS" level for free (waiving the $60 extra). We said okay.

Now it's time to renew again and I want to "unbump" us back to just the standard membership of $40. But I cannot do this online!! I called this morning and was told that they do not allow downgrading memberships online!!

The only ways I can do that is to 1) pay the full fee requested online ($100), and then request a refund of the "PLUS" fees, 2) drive the 90 miles to the store to do it in person or 3) have customer service put in a request for downgrade, which will take 3-4 weeks!! What a bunch of hogwash!!

The most annoying thing is, I had something in my online shopping cart that I wanted to purchase. Since my annual fees are due, they automatically added them to the cart - with NO way to delete them, or to delete the PLUS part. So if I want to buy the item, I have to pay the full membership fees, then ask for a partial refund. I think this is ridiculous.
