Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

IMO, the company and those people took a really stupid risk. The sub never met standards and it was just a matter of time before people died in it. The owner of the company deserves a few lawsuits and criminal charges.

So sad for the family and friends left behind.  I'm appreciative of the fact that it was quick instead of a drawn out death that took days.

Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

I watched James Cameron on the tv last night being interviewed.  He made it clear he thought it was irresponsible and reckless.  He seemed almost angry at the senseless loss.  I believe the word he used was "inexcusable".

I don't see Stockton Rush as inspirational, as some have said.  He cut corners and, in his own words "broke rules".  He was warned by those with more experience, but he didn't want to listen.  Instead he fired one of them.

Well, when you're planning to dive nearly 13,000 feet below the ocean, you need to double up on safety procedures, not the other way around.  You need to listen to others with more experience, even if they don't say what you want to hear.

Also, the site of the Titanic is protected from "tourism" by a 2020 agreement between the U.S. and the U.K.  Prior to that it was protected in 2012 by the UNESCO Convention, to prevent removal of artifacts by unauthorized parties.  To get around that Rush called anyone paying to go on the Titan "Mission Specialists".  Tell me what a 19-year-old is a specialist in?

The 2001 Convention provides for system of
cooperation between States Parties, to prevent
exploration deemed unscientific or unethical. They
also have the authority to seize any illicitly recovered
artifacts and close their ports to all vessels
undertaking exploration that is not done according to
the principles of the Convention.

I believe in exploration. Unfortunately, private sector money is now the driving force behind our next wave of deep water and space discovery.

This accident will halt people from getting tickets on this thing.  At least for quite a while.  I read where there are more people that visited the moon then any in deep water.

This was a sad outcome but they must have understood all the risks for such an adventure.  I just have a problem with all the people putting their own lives at risk and  money it takes for resuing a private venture.  Maybe all the millionaires who took part should have had some sort of life insurance plan in place.  Sounds crass but true.

@goldensrbest I don't see how there will be any monies to get from the suits. There's no insurance coverage for uncertified submersibles. The company, OceanGate, according to the CEO Rush (that passed), was not making a profit yet. It doesn't seem like a company with deep pockets. None of the components including the glass used in the window were certified for the use the company used them for...so suing the glass company would probably not pay out. Maybe a good lawyer with knowledge of maritime regulations and laws could come up with an angle. If there are suits that win I don't think the winners will get paid.
