Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

Praying for the families and their anguish.

Mike Tobin of Fox had a poignant interview with a gent in Newfoundland who was good friends with the French explorer who died.

Martha McCallum had a remarkable interview with Michael Guillen, who used to report on science for ABC news.   He visited the Titanic aboard one of the Russian submersibles, twenty years ago.

Michael Guillen almost died there as well.   His craft got caught and firmly stuck between the Titanic's propeller and the hull.  He said it was only the sheer skill of the vessel's Russian captain (who had been a former Mig (sp?) pilot, and who stayed cool under duress, that got them out.  He maneuvered and maneuvered, but Michael thought to himself, well, I'm going to die down here with all these souls from the Titanic.

It was harrowing to listen to.  Michael Guillen opined that there will be tons of finger-pointing now, and feels we need to.  He is not ultimately against these kind of tourist explorations though, either under sea, or the space tourist expeditions to come.  I thought that was interesting.

Very sad news. I was holding out hope.

All the teams helping with the search did an extraordinary job in finding the sub so fast.

I have to disagree and say not really.  If it was so close to the Titanic why did it take 4 days to find them?

I hope they can learn what caused this catastrophic explosion so it will never happen again. Only thing they didn't suffer is a blessing in disguise.

@Oznell   I watched that coverage too and felt all of the guests had very compelling stories to tell. Heart

Because it took days to get a piece of equipment to the area that could actually go down that deep.  I think it just arrived late last night or early this morning.

This was the expected outcome, even though we all kept hope in our hearts.  So sad especially for family and friends.

@phoenixbrd  I agree 110%.  I for one did not have any hope. The "mother" ship knew the mapping & directions the submerse takes on each run.  Once communications were "lost" for several hours after they were suppose to "check-in"  I know they suspected the worse.  There are things the public is not privey too.

The families were immediately contacted & more than likely "they knew" after "days" of no contact of a possible implosion (which is a blessing in disguise).

The families are the first to get all the updates.  They were prepared for the worse right from the beginning.

Once the news organizations got hold of it, the "spinning search, recovery & rescue" stories began knowing full well there are no equipment that can go that deep to grab or attached to anything.  Let alone an imploded one.  Like someone said in another post on the same subject, "it's like an elephant stepping on a grape.

Your search engine has many animated images of "tank" like objects imploding if you want to see what's actual like.

Dateline, 48 Hours & Lifetime are standing in line as I'm typing out this post.

Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

@Estellee

What I read on CNN said there was a crack in the hull, which would have caused an explosion, due to deep sea pressure.

Most scientist involved (that I've seen giving conferences) said they wouldn't have had any warning.

Sounds like they died instantly upon the explosion.

May they rest in peace......

Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

[ Edited ]

I am in Nova Scotia.  There was an interview with one of the design engineers who left the company.  According to him, this capsule was going to depths four times the rated safety level.  That is why the engineer left the company.

My career was in the maritime industry.  The blame game will be next.  Waivers or not, there will likely be lawsuits.

The Titanic sank on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.  This can be a very hostile marine environment.  As soon as I heard about the lost contact with the capsule, it was hard not to expect the worst.

Prayers for the families.  I am sure the last several days have seemed like an eternity.

My brain knew that this would be the outcome but my heart was still sending out messages of hope.

@CelticCrafter - Seriously?  Do you have any expertise in organizing a search-and-rescue effort of this magnitude?  The hundreds of miles from land?  The expanse of water in the search area?  The depth to which the submersible likely plunged?  The horrendous weather conditions prevailing?

As was mentioned many times:  like looking for a needle in a haystack, with no communication system from this jerry-rigged sub that used a cheap game controller for navigation.

To all those who risked their own lives in this effort and never gave up, a debt of gratitude is owed.  It is not their fault that the outcome was not what everyone hoped for.  That fault, IMO, lies firmly with Stockton Rush and he's paid the ultimate price for it.
