Learned today that Navy and the Administration knew on Sunday that it had imploded and refused to tell the public after informing the families.    Sick manipulation of the news.

@NYwoman

They strongly suspected the implosion, but had no evidence.   They could have been wrong.

Would YOU announce the deaths of 5 missing people if you strongly suspected their deaths but had no proof yet?

I sure as heck wouldn't because it's terribly irresponsible to put something out there without verification.

They didn't "refuse" to tell the public.  It was a cautious wait and see situation.

Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

I agree, @NYwoman .   Of course, as I acknowledged previously, they didn't have absolute "proof" of demise, and no one is suggesting they should have announced that conclusively.  That would have been rash and wrong.

But they withheld important information of the sounds of implosion, while allowing other, much flimsier info ( the so-called "banging") into the public stream.

It's part of a general context of "Big Brother-ish" attitudes by those in charge--  "they know best",   etc.    Trust is eroded by such actions.   And trust is at a premium.

I don't understand how anyone can't see that if the suspected implosion were announced it would have impeded the rescue effort.  Unless they were 100% positive it was a lost cause they needed 100% cooperation from all rescue agencies.

You can't say, "We're pretty sure it imploded so we're calling off the search."

I can see the headlines now.  The search teams announce "We heard a possible implosion.  We think they're all dead."

Then they go on to search for another three or four days to confirm what they already suspect and people are outraged.  "Government spend taxpayers' dollars on needless search!"

And if they call off the search after suspecting they were dead?  Those headlines don't even bear thinking of.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Again, straw men being raised, that weren't remotely suggested, as a reading of my two posts readily show.

Barring national dire national security issues, the public can be trusted to digest simple, non-alarmist facts, with all the accompanying cautions and disclaimers.  And rescue efforts continue unimpeded.  People used to know how to do this, with common sense and discretion.

Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

The families were informed early on & so was the Coast Guard & vital information was given on a need to know basis to necessary parties. The public sympathized & were interested & curious that’s it but our lives went on, unaffected. It wasn’t a conspiracy or “big brother” controlling the media. It was a matter of respect for the families & their privacy.

These passengers were survivalists & knew how to survive dire situations so families, knowing that fact, may have held on to hope even though survival was remote. The duty of those involved with rescue & recovery was to verify the implosion and that no one survived. It gives closure to the families & friends who loved them.

Bingo!   This was serious information given on a "need to know" basis.

No government agency is required to pass off all information the minute they hear about it.

They were prudent to wait to confirm the 5 deaths after they were POSITIVE they had died.  In this case, it was the identifiable submersible debris found a few days later.

There was no conspiracy to keep information from the public.

I think that the explosion or any sounds picked up by sonar are considered classified. We've been listening to the water since WWII.

Re: Sad Confirmation About The Titan Submersible

just saw a tweet from KTLA that the CANADIAN COAST GUARD is reporting that human remains MAY have been found in the wreckage.
