Sabra Hummus Recall for Listeria

I hadn't seen anything posted on this and thought I would share as I know many enjoy their products:

http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/19/health/hummus-sabra-recalled/index.html

(CNN)Sabra Dipping Co. is voluntarily recalling some hummus products and spreads because of possible Listeria contamination, the US Food and Drug Administration said Saturday.

The products were manufactured before November 8 at a plant where Listeria monocytogenes have been found, but the bacteria has not been found in products that have been tested, the FDA said. The products were distributed to retail outlets in the United States and Canada.
Consumers are urged to discard any product with a "Best Before" date through January 23, 2017. That date can be found on the lid of each package.
A list of the products recalled can be found on the FDA or Sabra websites.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the FDA says. Symptoms of listeriosis vary, but usually include fever, muscle aches, stiffness, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Sabra products not included in the recall are Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips.
Sabra recalled 30,000 cases of hummus in April 2015 because of fears of Listeria contamination.

Re: Sabra Hummus Recall for Listeria

As I sit here and eat my spicy black bean (homeade!!) hummus on Ezekeil bread!

I think they've had this happen before.  I've never bought that brand as they don't have an organic option--at least at my stores.

Thanks for the heads up though!

Re: Sabra Hummus Recall for Listeria

This isn't the first time this year that Sabra has had hummus recalled for the same thing, I believe. I've got a big container of their garlic hummus in the fridge right now. Guess I'll be taking that back.

Re: Sabra Hummus Recall for Listeria

Ironically I was just about to buy some hummus and try it for the first time.

Sabra is the brand I was going to try because it is so popular.

Cancelled that!

Thanks for the info.

Me too on the homemade. I just made some this week. Although I do like Sabra brand pine nut hummus and the lemon twist one is good.

@Lucky Charm your post made me smile as years ago my mom made a "dip" recipe she had found in the newspaper that everyone just loved.  It was very exotic at the time as it contained chickpeas (what are those?) and roasted red peppers.  At the time, I brought it to a party and everyone inhaled it as no one had ever tasted anything like that before (like I said, this was many years ago).  I realize now it was hummus and so easy to make especially with so many stores carrying these ingredients.  I admit it is easier to grab and go but this has convinced me to make my own from now on . . . Re: Sabra Hummus Recall for Listeria

My husband introduced me to hummus, he learned how to make it from his aunt when we was a teenager and living in Israel. It's funny how it's gotten so popular lately. Not that I'm complaining. I can't even find tahini where I am now I have to buy it online. That's what I get for moving to the boonies, no one here knows what falafel is either, we make that from scratch also. In fact, I think I'll go take out those frozen soaked chickpeas I have in the freezer and make some falafel today.

Homemade Hummus

Once you begin making it yourself, you'll never go back to the pre-made stuff.  Homemade is also a 1000x healthier without all the oil, etc.  There are a zillion different ways to make.

Just Google, "homemade hummus guide"...and Shape magazine has a really nice tutorial for different ways.

Try Pumpkin Hummus w/ cinnamon-sugar pita chips for a quick dessert.

Any hummus can be 'thinned out' w/ soy yogurt for a salad dresssing, as well.

If you have a can of chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic salt...the magic can begin!

Am I the only one that does not like hummus?
