Re: STREET STYLE IN THE FORTIES

@ALRATIBA   My boys wore saddle shoes when they were younger.  They had white with black saddles and navy with white saddles. My daughter wore white with navy saddles.

I wore them in HS.  I never see them on anyone anymore. Kids, even babies wear sneakers now. They're not required with school uniforms here. Brown oxfords are worn instead.

Re: STREET STYLE IN THE FORTIES

I am particularly attracted to the picture of the young woman with her hair tied up in a scarf, looking like she may be sitting on an aircraft part.

Before my mother married my father, she worked for a time at Pratt and Whitney Airacraft in a factory.  They were producing aircraft engines for the war effort.  She liked to recount that there were anti-aircraft guns on the roof.

While the pictures are lovely and interesting, people should realize that WWII was not over until 1945.  Many women gladly entered the war effort workplace, as so many men had been drafted into service.

It was a period of deprivation for American people, as everything was centered on the war effort.  And indeed, it was the beginning of women working outside the home in much larger numbers.

What do you mean by "cultural history?"  American culture? @millieshops .

I ask because I don't see culture displayed.  I see fashion displayed....

@gertrudecloset when I think of an era, I think the fashion, the music, the arts, etc. are the culture of the time.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear that was my late Dad as the Dapper Dan, the serviceman, and the guy in the fur-collared leather jacket...Thanks for the memories, @Oznell.

I agree. No ripped knees out of jeans, no awful half-tuck shirts, and people did not need to “rock” a look, QVC’s over used term on anything fashion. How do you “rock” a look? Rock out to music, rock in a rocking chair?

@gertrudecloset

Online defintion:

Culture refers to aspects of human-made elements including tools, dress, and media in addition to values, attitudes, and norms. Dress is a significant part of almost every culture.

Oh, I see.  I don't consider that culture.  I consider it a period in time.  I don't think it's representative of all of American culture, that's why I ask.  @millieshops

@ALRATIBAI don't consider this "culture."  I consider a period in time.  In no way do these photos reflect of all of America's culture.  Just a snap shot.  I guess that's why I prefer to see it as fashion.  If you're insisting on using the term "culture" you can say sub-culture.

@gertrudecloset   I don't think anything is representative of   ALL of any country.
