OP, sorry if you find yourself in difficult circumstances but I really don't see that SSA is in any responsible for these difficulties.
Ford, your sister's sad story is a good illustration of why women always need to have income independent of a spouse.

Yes, it is. Believe me, all of my daughters know this and have passed it on down to their daughters. Only one of my daughters is still dependent on alimony because of the profession she has worked in all of her life which, unfortunately, doesn't provide a living wage these days.
No one should ever be dependent upon anyone else financially . . . ever. People die, people divorce and run off, and some can't even support themselves, let alone someone else. It's a tough world out there for those who did not plan ahead, and so often it's out of ignorance (not stupidity, just ignorance) of the realities we face as we age.

I wanted to let you good people for being so kind to me yesterday. I did lose my temper with the bad apples in the bunch. You are right, I let them "cross my bridge" as they say. No more, I should have expected the "beasts" to come out!

Some of you thank you for your kind replies-there a few of you (you know who you are) that are miserable people.
#1 Yes, I worked all my life (had 31 credits for SSA) then worked for the state until I could not work any more:
#2 I have Meniere's Disease (severe dizziness), Asthma, Type 2 diabetes, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Please don't say I didn't prepare for my retirement-sometimes life has other plans for you-I shutter to think if it were to happen to you.
I left my first husband when he attacked me and had to live in a women's shelter after 17 years of marriage. He is the state employee and is remarried (poor woman-stupid woman). He was a deputy in a prison system.
I was lucky enough to marry my best friend who happened to be 11 years younger and no he is not my boy toy-but a true man.
I am NOT a lazy person-worked since I had to get a work permit at 15.
You nasty people will get yours in your next life. I know I can sleep at night knowing I am a good person. Thanks for the rant-I'm sure there will be more to say by you.
I am truly sorry for all you have gone through. Good luck

I am sorry for the OP's health problems.
It makes perfect sense that you cannot collect a spouse's SS benefits until the spouse is old enough to collect. Had she not remarried, she would have been eligible to collect benefits based on her ex husband's status.

Besides, we won't be relying upon SS . . . anything we get will strictly be "play money". We live well below our means. Always have. Probably always will. As the same with our parents. And their parents. Raised to save, save & save some more. But I spend plenty too, just within reason for US.
How great for you Qwackertoo.........my mom got sick when I was 14 so I really raised myself and my brothers and sister.........they are my half brothers and sister but we feel whole.........we were just trying to make it each day. I so regret not being taught things and being so poor when I started working I spent it all on having things.........I don't do that now but I am 57.......not long enough to save. You are very smart.

kookielady...........I have not read all of the posts but I read your post and I am sorry there are so many unkind people on these boards........I don't come here like I used to but they don't bother me anymore.........they just have a blank face but a mouth of a snake.......do not let them bother you.......we reap what we sow.........I am sorry for your health issues..........I have them also and sometimes people don't understand but there are very many kind wonderful people on this board. It hurts to be shout at and have rude comments made but they don't hurt me anymore. I don't want you to let them get you down either.

My uncle Pepo had a blank face and the mouth of a gecko. It is very unsettling. I completely agree.

What a nasty thing to say to someone you don't even know. Oh, and BTW, next time you say it, it's "boy toy".....
You took the post right out of my hands...

If you don't contribute how can you collect? My sister worked for the state & brother the government. Neither paid in and can't collect social security. Both are divorced & get a pension.
