i would wait for instructions from TPTB on this.   if SSA is going to send out emails, one would think they get it right the first time and not send out emails without live links. and then ay they made a "mistake" .

i forwarded the emails to:  phishing-report@us-cert.gov

this is hinky: what if someone has phone with no texting? too bad?

"If you do not have a text-enabled cell phone or you do not wish to provide your cell phone number, you will not be able to access your my Social Security account."

Huh???   It's incredibly easy to figure what is legit and what isn't. SSA, IRS, banks never send out emails like that.  Never.....ever.  It might be phising and it might be somone attempting to gain remote access to your computer by getting you to answer that email.

@chrystaltree  Message wasn't from IRS, it was from Social Security.  I got one, too.  I get emails from SS because I gave them my email address when I enrolled & started using mysocialsecurity on their site

We can get emails from SS if we subscribe to the service at subscriptions.ssa.gov

Here's a copy of the message.  Please note the very last sentence.

Starting in August 2016, Social Security is adding a new step to protect your privacy as a my Social Security user.  This new requirement is the result of an executive order for federal agencies to provide more secure authentication for their online services. Any agency that provides online access to a customer’s personal information must use multifactor authentication.

When you sign in at ssa.gov/myaccount with your username and password, we will ask you to add your text-enabled cell phone number.  The purpose of providing your cell phone number is that, each time you log in to your account with your username and password, we will send you a one-time security code you must also enter to log in successfully to your account.

Each time you sign into your account, you will complete two steps:

  • Step 1:  Enter your username and password.
  • Step 2:  Enter the security code we text to your cell phone (cell phone provider's text message and data rates may apply).

The process of using a one-time security code in addition to a username and password is one form of “multifactor authentication,” which means we are using more than one method to make sure you are the actual owner of your account.

If you do not have a text-enabled cell phone or you do not wish to provide your cell phone number, you will not be able to access your my Social Security account.

If you are unable or choose not to use my Social Security, there are other ways you can contact us.  To learn more, please review the Frequently Asked Questions found here.

Wrong.  SSA does send email, as several posters have stated.

You probably bet emails about general things but I don't think they would ever send an email asking for identifying information or phone numbers or contact info.

I'd notify the SSA.  They have a contact page:

My big question is:...........What does giving any of them, IRS,SSA,your email, FACEBOOK, your phone number add ANY security to your life?  Your phone number(s) are out there for anyone who wants to find them.  I think it just adds another layer of ability to the HACKERS.

I will go to the office to conduct any real business.

Good luck on that. We can't even call the office without knowing a workers name or extension #.

Guess we could go stand in front of the office at 8 and wait for them to open at 9 with all the people from all walks of life.
