We can thank the hackers for all this new trouble.

@SharkE, t's real.  I found this transcript of testimony of Carolyn Colvin, acting SSA commissioner, before a Congressional committee in May 2016. Skip down to the last paragraph in the Cybersecurity section, and you will see that she says cell phone security will become mandatory this summer

Something told me it was. I was pretty sure it was legit, but, I don't rush into decisions lightly.

Thank U for this link . I'm going to trust you on this and complete this process this afternoon.

One good thing about these boards is people will help others most of the time.   This information will help me and others .

I was kind of put back when they said in the future other things will be added also.  Phew ! So, we do this, then, other actions are headed down the pike it looks like.

Good work !

it's phishing. there may be a mandate by Congress but it could still be phishing.

SSA.gov does not send out emails unless you initiate a mySSA.gov account OR a change or update is made to mySSA.gov account. they will send snail mail with instructions to make changes or open a myy

i received two emails . The first one's header states "Protect Your Privacy"  the first one asking for a cell#

then they sent one a few hours later saying they made a "MISTAKE"  not activating the links in the first email and the links now work!

"The links in our previous email didn’t work properly.  We’ve fixed the problem and apologize for any confusion"

they are tricky. hover over the link with the mouse  the links on mine read  links dot ssa dot  gov /track

  • Links, logos, or pictures in the body of an official Social Security email will always direct you to an official Social Security website. Rather than rely on the way a link looks, please follow these steps to confirm authenticity:
  • Links to the official Social Security website will always begin with http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ or https://secure.ssa.gov/
  • To verify the web address of a link or picture, hover over it with your mouse until a text box appears with the web address. This is the actual address you will be directed to and it should always end in “.gov/” A forward slash should always follow the “.gov” domain.
  • Example - http://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/

If the email had provided a link, I would be suspicious.

But it seems it's just telling you to go directly to ssa.gov.

It may be legit.

NEVER use a link provided in any email to go to a site such as a bank, or credit card company, and so on.

Always close the email, then go directly to your site in question

Update-- I received the same email yesterday.   When I have a minute, I'll log into my SS account to see if I'm directed to comply.

I got an email telling hubbo to go to his ss account  and now put in a cell phone number, they, will send to him a new code, to use whenever he goes to his SS account in an effort to protect his information with another layer of protection.

Makes you wonder is this 'phishing'?

I believe the policy is real, but yes, there could be phishing emails being sent in conjunction with a legit one that SSA has sent.  I received only one email, and it has a different subject line that the one given above.  So, there are three versions that we know of.  One or more could be phishing.  Don't go to the site via an email link, go directly via the usual URL.

In my opinion this has SCAM written all over it .... I suggest you call the SS office in your area & ask them if the SS Dept sent out these emails .... I would think, if they wanted information from anyone it would be in the form of an actual letter sent in the mail! 📬 ✉️

@SharkE, I got this email, too, but it is in regard to MySocialSecurity, not IRS.  In fact, in your post, you also say it is in regard to Social Security, not IRS as you put on your headline

I think it's real because the from line domain is SSA.gov, but like you, I'm not sure. I find it odd that SSA would require a user to have a cell one in order to use the account, and according to this message, that is indeed the case.  That makes me skeptical.  I know that security codes they describe are sometimes used, but usually there are alternate methods of delivery....landline, cell, email.  In this case, it says the only means of delivery is cell phone.  Hmmm, that makes me suspicious.

To verify if it's real, in August (when this change will be implemented according to the email)try, logging into the SSA account using the standard URL and see if you are required to enter a cell number to access the account. Do not use a link in the email (I can't remember if there is one).

your absolutely right I got my connections crossed. LOL

I was referring to SS.  Thank U for the correction ! It's early ! LOL

You should be able to edit your opening title @SharkE.

@I agree with @bri20 that you should check into the account through the SS website, not an email.  Sounds phishy for sure.
