@fthunt wrote:I had a string of those calls - older man's voice - apologize first for over charging me on my utility bill. Press a key and we will promptly give you a refund.
These calls started during the summer for months. Haven't had one recently - but expect he 'shall return".
I just hung up............
@fthunt Yes, this is the call I received.

This isn't anything compared to the kinds of spam calls I'm getting lately. My phone forces some sort of ID or it won't ring so the tricksters are using legitimate business numbers to try and scam. It is not the real business calling it is a group up to no good spoofing that company's number.
I got calls and solicitations on Sunday. Yes on a Sunday. Is there no shame?

@Venezia wrote:Sadly, someone we know recently got scammed out of $400. She said she got a call from her tv company, offering her a better deal. She said the person on the phone was actually able to change her tv settings - in other words, had access.
So she thought it must be legit. She admits she was stupid. When the person told her that to take advantage of this offer, she needed to buy prepaid cards on eBay.............she did.
She's a waitress, a single mom who works hard for her money and she got caught off-guard. I told her that, if she never changed the default password on her system (she hadn't) that's how they got in. She knows for the future, but it's an expensive lesson.
Scammers are nasty, nasty lowlifes, with no conscience.
I would contact eBay and tell them what happened. She has nothing to loose and maybe it could be a win. I wouldn't give up. That is a lot of money to loose for a single mother. We have such low lives in our society. Very sad.

@elated - Thank you. I'll suggest that to her. I'll remind her that she should also contact AT&T (DirecTV) since it was someone posing as a company rep and also report it to our State Attorney General's Office.

It's a wild world....I don't live in fear or negativity but I do ask a lot more questions and/or trust my intuition/good judgement.

I get lots and lots of calls on my landline, especially now with the medicare signups, but also scam calls from "Amazon," etc. I simply don't answer any of them and let them go to messages. I then can hear them and delete.
The legit ones I call back. Except for the ringing, they don't bother me. I've tried those numbers that block calls, but they didn't work.

@zitawins I hardly ever answer the phone, but the few times I do, it is always a telemarketer or scammer. I tell DD to email me if she is going to call so I will answer, and usually, believe it or not, I can tell her ring, lol.

We don't even answer much since almost every call except for family is about Medicare plans.
