Often times this phrase is used by parents (or employers) to start a sentence that actually means "you have brought this upon yourself, the consequences are on you, and I now have to set you straight." It's no wonder we often don't react well when it is used during adult conversation.

You probably shouldn't have posted here either then.
OTOH, snark is also recognized in all its forms :-)

Could any of the posts beginning this way be because, as some articles or studies have pointed out, that women in particular often use the word "sorry" -- especially in business dealings.
I know the OP is about "sorry, but" and I am sure that at least a few posters are deliberately trying to couch unkindness with that preface, but sometimes those less sure of their words may use the preface also.
Sorry, but perhaps I could have said all of the above more clearly.

I understood you, @GingerPeach.
I can see that, depending upon where they live and perhaps their age, a woman might be schooled to believe she needs to use sorry as a preface. Sad in this day and age, but entitely possible.

I was trying to joke, but I guess it fell flat. (Sorry, but I refuse to use emojis all the time!)
Thanks, @Moonchilde The thread is compelling.

During my first year of teaching, I worked with a streetwise young lady in 7th grade. Often she would preface a statement by saying, "No offense, but..." and then of course we all knew she was going to offend someone. I worked with her all year on trying to help her out with that one, lol! At least she gave us warning...

A couple years ago, the check-out clerk at Albertson's said to me (without any "sorry" preface), "You could do a lot better at fixing your hair." They permanently lost a customer.......................
