Re: SORRY BUT - Deliberate snark or ?

When I say "Sorry, but" it means I'm softening my disagreement.  In no way is it a euphemism for sorry, but you're an idiot.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

The meme ^^^^^^^^^^^ made me laugh.

I hope it's okay I included it - not trying to derail the conversation.

To me those words simply mean that the person disagrees.  I don't get worked up over it.

Some who know me would say that I am not an expert with grammar.  I always thought that using the word but negated the word in front of it.

Sorry, but = not really sorry

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

Re: SORRY BUT - Deliberate snark or ?

Never ever apologize here.

Sincere or "snarky" the only thing it accomplishes is it gives some  license to be offended a second time.

Re: SORRY BUT - Deliberate snark or ?

I liken it to,

Not to be rude, but.....

Not to interrupt, but.....

Not to change the subject, but....

Not trying to tell you what to do, but....

etc., etc., etc.,

and then the person proceeds to do exactly what they said they would Not be doing.

That's about it.

CAN one find an example of the use that's not snarky? Yes. But 95% of the time it's meant to be snarky and/or condescending.
