Really?  Not to put too fine a point on it, but wouldn't it be the same with a regular cell phone?  I don't think long distance calls are less on a smart phone than a regular phone.

the calls on smartphones are FREE via a few different apps, plus they can be video calls, regular calls, and multiple person calls.

Smart phones are like any other tool. Most of the problems with young people and their phones, or any other technology for that matter, is the result of poor parening. I don't understand parents who refuse to set boundaries, rules, and restrictions for their kids.
