SO ! How was your Grandparents Day ?

I'm a bit disappointed myself ! I never heard anything mentioned on the news that it was grandparents day or even that it was coming up on Sunday. Nothing mentioned at church yesterday and they always note Mother's Day and Father's Day. I didn't see a commercial that it was coming up and here's a gift or card selection to buy. I asked my children later in the day if they knew it was grandparents day and they both said no they did not.

Now I wasn't looking for a gift or card or  to be taken to lunch or dinner but just to recognize the day would have been nice. My grandchildren are 7 and 23 so at least they  could have said Happy Grandparents day but they didn't know, especially the 7 yo.

So did your family or anyone remember the day and how did you

enjoy Grandparents Day?  I do hope your day was special !  My children apologized and told me how much they and my grandsons love me and that was enough for me.  I do think the day should be as important as Mother's and Father's day because  without  grandparents there would be no parents day ! right ? Woman LOL

I wonder if this holiday was made up by Hallmark or American Greetings.

Never heard of it but my SIL went to her grandson's school for lunch.  She brought lunch for both of them.  This was in the Houston area.

Re: SO ! How was your Grandparents Day ?

I did not realize "Grandparents Day" was a thing.

Are there actual greeting cards you can buy for that?

I was thrilled I actually managed to reach my grandson at college this weekend to check on him.

When he answered I asked if he was he busy.  He said "well, I am at a tailgating party before the football game but can spare a minute." Smiley Happy

That is a good thing and he said everything was "fine."  He sounded happy and that is all I needed to hear.

The rest of my "grands" were out of town at games.

@Goodie2shoes  Nope. I didn't even know it was Grandparent's day. My grandchildren probably didn't know it either.

Yes, I never heard of the holiday when I was growing up in NYS.  So, I never wished my grandparents a happy holiday.  Hopefully, they never heard of it either.

From National Today.com

In 1969, nine-year-old Russell Capper sent President Nixon a letter suggesting that a day should be set aside in order to celebrate grandparents. On June 12, 1969, he received a letter back from Rose Mary Woods — Personal Secretary to the President — reading, “Dear Russell, Thank you for your letter to President Nixon. Your suggestion regarding a Grandparent’s Day is appreciated, but the President ordinarily issues proclamations designating periods for special observance only when a Congressional resolution authorizes him to do so. With best wishes, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Personal Secretary to the President.”

Following this letter, Marian McQuade was recognized nationally by the U.S. Senate and by President Jimmy Carter as the founder of National Grandparents Day. McQuade wanted to educate the youth about the importance of seniors and the contributions they have made throughout history. She urged the youth to “adopt” a grandparent and learn more about their lives, challenges, and desires for the future.

In 1977, Senator Randolph, with the help of other senators, introduced a joint resolution to the senate requesting the president to “issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday of September after Labor Day of each year as ‘National Grandparents’ Day’.” Congress passed the legislation, proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparent’s Day. On August 3, 1978, Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation, and the day was finally celebrated the following year.
