Re: SF BAY AREA Heat Wave

[ Edited ]

113 here.  Most of the day it was 109. My poor goldfinches outside.  I had two baths going with sprinklers and all.  They had their little beaks open, panting like a dog! But Bobby, the blue jay came and cussed me out for letting the finches borrow his pool.😾  I moved it from his side of the yard to where the finches are, and he had his feathers in a twist, ! So of course I had to "right his area". Lol.  And the gold finches made do with the one bath.  It was crowded, but they managed!  Even the bees came to drink. As soon as I ran the hose to fill the baths there they were, 3 of them.  They get to edge of the bath and drink the water that splashes. Or they follow the hose.  They were hanging around the bath all day!  I never knew until lately how bees love their water.  Never thought about it before...but they do love their fresh water.

I think we have 3 more days , then some humid days and we settle into "spring like" weather of 82!    Yes!!  I had to put off planting the beets and carrots.

@ Moonchilde, II have a funny story here. Our heat index is usually in the triple digits, so it's hot.

DS and DIL went to an outdoor festival. They were sweltering....

One of the cigarette companies had an air conditioned trailer, but you had to say you smoked their brand, and show ID.

Neither one of them smoke-err-not cigarettes anyway! DS bought a pack to gain entry. Not only were they able to sit down and cool off, but they were also given bottled water and coupons....they lit up and "fake smoked"! They came home a day early because of the heat.

I can not fathom going to any outdoor anything in the temps you are suffering.

PS-a little trick used by those with MS: ice packs on your neck and wrists....the icy foot bath is a great idea!

IMO, when it's that hot, I have found fans to be somewhat useless-better than nothing-but they just blow hot air around.

Misting fans filled with cold water are delightful-check out Amazon....you can buy handheld, or go "big" and buy the type used in theme parks.....

Bowls filled with lots of ice and water placed in front of a vertical fan can absolutely lower the air temperature a bit.....but no doubt, even if you have an ice maker, it's not going to keep up with demands.....

I'm thinking "out of the box", but down here, many convenience stores have "beer caves" that are opened to the public.....nice frigid rooms where cases of beer are kept....

Libraries may not have AC, but I have found on a hot day, grocery stores are delightful-especially the meat and frozen food departments.

I am not a movie theater person, but given those temps, I'd become one....I have never been in a theater without climate control.....

After Charley, we were without electricity...I dampened my top sheet-it helped!

By all means, those misting bottles help.....

Be safe friends.

Normally I give hugs-too hot-a hand shake!

@Poodlepet2, I've done the ice bit. I had tickets to equestrian events at the 1984 Olympics. The area where they were held was often 90-100 degrees in July/August. I put small ice packs under my hat, right on top of my head, and moved them to my neck when necessary. We needed this even in the shade!

When I was a kid and into my 20s everyone went to the LA County Fair with temps 95-105 and there was no a/c in the buildings (or any in public transportation either). I don't know why we weren't all dropping like flies.

@Noel7  Last night on the weather report, itwas stated that Friday SF reached 106, so I know it was hotter where i live, but it was dry heat, makes all the difference.  Hot again today, but only 100, lol.  DH works in SF with no air conditioning, and in a suit!  I hope he doesn't keel over, lol.

I don't have AC at home either, but do have many fans, and a wet towel around my neck, the only way I can sleep in the heat. Smiley Happy

I was amazed it got up to 106 yesterday for that all time record!  But it sure was hot and it's hot today too -- I think expected to be mid 90's but I wouldn't be surprised if it hit triple digits again in the city.  It's HOT!!  I don't have A/C but I do have a fan (and open windows!) and I'm trying to drink water (although I'm not much of a water drinker).

Hoping it cools off a bit tomorrow so I can get some cleaning and errands done!

Hi @sueinsf

I never turned to water until recently, now I love it.  The trick for me is adding a lot of ice.  Ice tea is also good, Trader Joes has a nice green tea that comes in a bottle, blueberry pomegranate.

ABC news online predicts temps in the 90s today, you may want to postpone errands until tomorrow or Monday.

It was really hard to sleep last night even though I had the fan on all night.

 Your poor DH @mousiegirl  !

I have fans all over the house, sitting in front of one now. I also took a cold shower at midnight, that helped.

I'm limiting food to mostly fresh produce and chicken.

Anyone have any other hints? 😃
