I live near a good Whole Foods, but I can’t say that the staff can properly monitor the buffet areas at all times, and be sure someone isn’t doing something icky.

@ValuSkr wrote:Ha - he wanted a sample! I frequently see people sampling produce. That's no better than the soup guy, though less gross.
I never take food from those open bars, whether it's a supermarket or a restaurant. They're a formula for disaster.
I agree 100%. Who knows how long the food has been sitting out & how many people have "sampled" it.

I don't get food from the self-serve section.

One day I was at the hot bar in Whole Foods. I was waiting for the guy in front of me, not really paying attention. Then I saw what he was doing-he had a little fork and was going down the length of the bar taking a bite of each. With the same fork!!!! Some mid aged guy, didn't look homeless. I turned him in. The guy I told was aghast! He went right over and told the guy he couldn't do that and I don't know what happened after I left. Needless to say I didn't get anything at the hot bar. I imagine this guy will be back another day. They need to do more than a slap on the wrist. This was NOT staged. I was next to him. I saw it.

He was eating directly from the large pot of soup which are
available in those grocery store prepared self-serve islands.
He pulled out the ladle, drank the soup &
returned the ladle to the large pot of soup...
Contaminating the entire pot of soup to unsuspecting
customers after him.

was at a grocery store that had a salad type bar set up in one of the isles. I arrived in the isle where this island salad bar was, and found 2 kids ages about 10-12 yrs old eating off the spoons in the foods. The mother was standing with their back to the 2 kids, when I saw this, I did make a mention of it tothe mother, all she did was tell the kids to put the spoons back in the food and they left that isle and kept on shopping.
I did report it to the manager. Don’t know if anything was done,
after I saw that, I never ever have gone back to any kind of self serving bar. Just can’t take chances.

You know, that is just gross! My husband told me about that,
What is wrong with some people? Do they just not have a brain?
i still remember when I was a teenager and my family went out to dinner at this nice steak restaurant, and yes, I STILL remember this! We are sitting at the table, already had gotten our salads from the salad/soup bar and the rolls from the waitress. So, this man is up there taking the ladles of the different salad dressings and tasting them! Even back then I thought what issssss that man doing??? The restaurant was a nice place, did we ever go back there?, NO!! None of us could get that image out of our heads .. totally gross!
Like I said that was a long time ago and it still sticks with me even after all these years, I am not rone for restaurant buffets/salad/desert bars to this day.
