smaug....ok. Thank you for your response. The following is taken from the article.
The court awarded Ventura more than $1.8 million (far lower than the amount Ventura sought), consisting of $500,000 for defamation damages and an additional $1.3 million for “unjust enrichment” (meaning that Kyle and his estate wrongly profited from said defamation). The book publisher’s libel insurance will cover the $500,000.

"Win, I did happen to be very aware of the story. My son is a history (his Master's degree) and military buff. He served in both the Army and Navy and moderates a couple of military website."
I've never heard someone served in both the army and the navy. Did he enlist in both branches of our armed services?
I thank your son for his service.
It is not that unusual for people to serve in one branch and then switch to another. My FIL did it and I knew quite a few. some enlistments and commissions are only 3 years sometimes.

Arrogant liberal pride? .... Seriously ???
What the heck are you talking about?
ALL of the nominated movies were exceptional, in different ways ...... People in the film making vote based on many different technical details, not just was a good movie!
In fact, "Hollywood" had given many awards to military/war films over the years.
Just a quick search shows well over 100 films. Recent ones include:
Mash
Patton
Coming Home
Deer Hunter
Tin Drum
Apocalypse Now
Reds
Killing Fields
Platoon
Year of Living Dangerously
Saving Private Ryan
Pearl Harbor
And many more. Films about the Vietnam war and vets have won awards and that war was very controversial.
Add "The Hurt Locker" to the list... Best Picture.
You're way off base SnowPink.

Isn't your brother a SEAL too?
No, he was a Marine, then went to NAPS and then Annapolis. He is now a private defense contractor in S Korea, Hong Kong and a few other places in Asia.
Our daughter and SIL are Annapolis grads.
You must be so very proud.
Irshgrl and Muttmom You both must be proud of your family members.

It's not about the "war" in the movie --- it's about Chris Kyle.
Just like clockwork, some crazy libs are coming out on Twitter criticizing the movie and saying horrible things about Chris Kyle.

Thank you, ivana. I will pass on your kinds words to my son.
He served six years total in the Army, came home and was away at college when he got re-activated for Desert Storm.
After that, he came back home and served several years in the Navy (can't really remember how long, it was one enlistment).
Then he met a beautiful young lady and, well, now there are three grands and four greatgrands from this blessed union.
He has been a federal corrections officer for the past 15 years, he has always been dedicated to service of some type or the other.
ETA. Edited, I made the desert a dessert !

I look forward to seeing this movie. I saw CK's wife and dad interviewed on tv several days ago. It's always interesting to see the real people the movie is based on. I vaguely recall the Jesse Ventura incident but I do remember it. Everyone I know that saw it liked it as well.
