Hoping to visit Savannah GA this October.  Any suggestions, tips, advice and must-do's would be greatly appreciated (especially places to stay).  TIA

Oh, I've wanted to visit Savannah ever since I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I'm going to watch this thread and I hope you get lots of good ideas I can borrow. Smiley Happy

Savannah does have a tourism site and I always like to check out the official tourism site when I plan a trip.

It's beautiful. I only spent one day there, took a boat from Hilton Head Island. It was very early April and it was already brutally hot and humid. Don't know what Oct is like.

So I didn't get to enjoy it all that much, walked around a bit and looked at some of the beautiful homes. Took a guided small bus tour. There are cobblestones everywhere, so comfortable shoes are a must.

Have a great time!

@ChynnaBlue I read that book too, I went from shop to shop looking for the statue from the book cover. A small replica that I could buy. No luck.

I think they have tours based on the book, at least they used to. I was there a long time ago.

I just love Savannah.  I have stayed both in the historic district and outside of town.  I much prefer staying in the Historic District.  Just park your car and walk all the time you are there.  A few weeks ago we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express right on Bay Street.  It was wonderful.  Our room overlooked the river, beautiful at night and watching the container ships going through was great.  There are several tours you can take.  One in particular (especially if you stay outside of town, it includes the parking and your car just has to be out by the next morning.)   You can ride it all day, get on and off and they have people explaining all the history to you.  Venture out into the squares and little neigborhoods and you will find some unique little restaurants and shops.  We found a wonderful breakfast/lunch place by accident as it was raining and went back the next morning for breakfast.  Down by the river there are various shops and restaurants.  If you like old fashioned English fish and chips vist Churchill's pub on Bay Street for drinks and dinner.  If you drive out to Tybee Island you will find some interesting spots.  There is an historic fort there worth stopping and spending a few hours at. Can't wait until our next visit.  Maybe this time I will get my husband to do the ghost walk one night.

I went to Savannah, GA last fall and toured the historical district.  Ate at Paula Deen's restaurant and ordered shrimp and grits from the menu.  They were good.  The buffet looked so-so.  Did the tour of the home where the murder took place in the book - the Mercer Williams house. Toured the Bonaventure Cemetery. That was neat. Flying Monk Noodle Bar was delicious and good price.  The Salt Table has gourmet spices.  There is a wine bar downstairs on the Salt Table and you can taste Georgia wines. That was a nice break from the heat outside. Bought the All Round Seasoning, Black Truffle salt, Lime Fresco Salt. They are delicious. Ate at the Pink House, another historical building, but food not that great and prices are high.  Lunch prices are probably better price.  Wasn't impressed with Tybee Island.  Got bit by mosquitos there.  Dolphin boat ride ok.  Shopped and shopped. Ate a lot of pralines which are delicious fresh.  Rented pedi cabs when our feet were tired from walking.  It is a buggy that is pulled by someone on a bicycle, usually a college kid, ask for a stong guy.  We got a little college girl on one of our rides and she could hardly get us going.  There is the Savannah Art College so there is a lot of college kids. That was fun too.  Ate at the Pirate House, another really old historical building. Food was so-so.  There was a Greek place down by the river that had good food and good price.  Don't remember name. Can't remember hotel name, but it was near the river.  I will check my travel notes and try to update my post later.  The hotel had breakfast included every morning.  That was nice. I looked at my travel notes. It was the Hampton Inn on E.Bay St in the historical district.  We also ate at a place called the Treylor Park right down from our hotel on the same street.  They had peanut butter and jelly chicken wings which sounds weird, but they were really good.

I may be giving you more info than you want, but these are some of our favorites when in Savannah:

-We stay at The Gastonian.

-River Walk is fun to visit, lots of shops - River Street Sweets (pralines)

-Downtown shopping - Paris Market, Savannah Bee Company, One Fish Two Fish

-Definately go to Back in the Day Bakery - lunch is fabulous.  Get the Bacon Jam (like a BBQ) sandwich

.

-They have some really good downtown restaurants. The Pirate's House, The Olde Pink House

- Take a carriage ride; walk all the squares (think Forrest Gump) and take in all the beautiful architecture; stop into Cathedral of St. John the Baptist - gorgeous architecture; Railroad Museum.

- Head out to Tybee Island (about 30 min depending on traffic) and if you like history, stop by Fort Pulaski, or go out and visit the Lighthouse (you can go to the top) and walk through Fort Screven; there's a museum inside.

Depending on your dates in Oct., Tybee has Pirate Weekend.

Some great places to eat on Tybee: Tybee Island Social Club (aka Social), The Breakfast Club.

Shopping: Seaside Sisters

The beaches there aren't great.  You can see the ocean though.

October can be really hot and humid.  Take comfy shoes and bug spray and have FUN!!!  Savannah is beautiful!
