Re: SAFETY ON THE NEW FORUMS

At this point, I am not joining, too much controversy over the making up of names, birthdays, email addresses that are never used. I am not used to that kind of thing, and I just dont feel comfy with much of it.  So, will take a break after 19 years, it will be missed very much by me, it was a normal part of my day, just abouit every day.

Just a suggestion, but I would rethink the name of the new board.  Using the letter Q in the title may attract a certain group of people who are not interested in TV shopping or joining conversations with ladies to talk aout life's annoyances, joys or grandchildren.  In a roundabout way, this could be a safety concern.

@JillyMarie  From what I have read about the new forums they will be going private around the time the forums here close, so unless this group of people sign up now they won't be able to see the new board or post at all.

I was surprised  you can google QVC community and  posts come up. These posts are on the internet not just here.

You can even Google a particular product review and Q's posts pop up.

I have a few family members in criminal law.  Here are some steps to be safe when on ANY forum.

1.  Use a different email address then you use for your everyday things. I have a gmail account that I only use for forums and sometimes for ordering from a strange company.

2.  DO NOT use your real name when signing up.  First name is ok but not last name.

3.  Always check the address bar and make sure there is a lock on it.

4.  Be careful not to talk about where your kids go to school or where you work or your husband work.

5.   Clear your cookies and Cache' often.

6.  Do not use your real Birth Date

If you already signed up , You can delete and change things.

I personally think the new board seems safe.  Most of the subjects here are also over there. You can look around as a guest, but from what I hear that will change.  There ia also a thread about how to do things.  Most of the people that hunghere are also over there.   Hope this helps!

@BalletBabe   Good advice.

When I signed up on the new board, I created a throwaway email.

You do not have to use your real name or birthdate.

If you do not feel comfortable moving to the new board, by all means, do not.  No one is forcing you to do so.

You can go there as a guest and look around.  There is now a Code of Conduct displayed for your info.

The last time that I checked, there were 768 members.

No one is saying they are forced, yet many of peoples concerns are being brushed aside.  Hope it works out well for all.

Exactly.

I've posed the question to fellow posters here and got no response.  Fine.

So, again, I'm asking moderator(s) or administator(s) from the new board to answer whether or not they have access to our names.

Just to be clear I know the minute we peruse the internet we are putting our "business" out there.  I, myself, am a victim getting 100s of emails each day.

I am just giving posters who like to keep their info private a heads up.

@magicmoodz, They do not do that. Emails are used to confirm your membership when you first sign up and to inform you if they are closing the forum for awhile to do maintenance.  Most communications are done on the forum.

You may be right, but being private usually means that unless you sign up and are accepted as a member you cannot read or reply on that particular board.  There is a list of boards on the main proboard index and that is where the name of the new board will appear.  But perhaps there is a way to make it completely invisible.  I don't really know.

Do individual moderators have access to real names of those who sign up over there?

I opened a gmail account.  (It didn't ask for a phone number.)

But if I sent someone an email, my name would show up in their inbox, not the email address.

DO THE MODERATORS/ADMINISTRATORS HAVE OUR REAL NAMES ON THE PROBOARDS?

Maybe one (or all) can answer to that?

NO,  the mods can only see e-mail addresses.  We can't even see your DOB.  We have to make an effort to view your e-Mail address by going into your profile. ProBoards does not require your name to register.

There is no list no for us to view except for nick names you using. ( the same as qvc)

The Mods have no reason to want yo look at your e-mail address,  We don't intend to e-Mail anyone.

The mods at QVC probably have more access than those on ProBoards....like your legal name, your address, credit card info and e-mail.

Your personal info is already in data basis for every company you do business with via internet.

I certainally have no reason to want cause my harm to anyone.  I worked in health insurance for more than 25 years and had access to very private info for well known people.  I have never broken their trust and never would never would.

People are making this much harder than it needs to be. It is almost like some people are trying to sabotage the new board because they are mad at the Q. I am actually shocked at how some of the folks here are acting. We are adults and they are acting like toddlers.
