I got this DWP notice in my emails this morning. I don't buy many mylar balloons, but thought I'd pass it on.
Today we have an important safety notice for you.
Metallic mylar balloons, though festive, are dangerous around power lines.
One of the most common causes of power outages in Los Angeles is mylar balloons coming into contact with power lines. They can also short transformers, melt an electrical wire, or spark an electrical surge that could destroy home electronics.
California law requires all mylar balloons to be anchored with a weight to prevent them floating up into power lines.

@Tinkrbl44 With so many people purchasing these DAILY, this is a vital piece of infomation!👍 The ones I purchase have always been weighted, and I never thought about some not having them, but definitely WILL now!🥰 To know they are THIS dangerous is frightening!😐 I did know they are especially harmful around our fur-babies.🐕💝
THANK you for caring to share this eye-opening information with us today!❤

A few years ago, pre-covid, I was shopping in my favorite dollar store. As usual, the manager was busy filling helium baloons with his big green helium tank.
Since I'd noticed him do it several times before, I commented that he must sell a lot of them. He said yes, they do. On average, his store sells about eight thousand dollars a month just on helium balloons.
$8 grand a month! Shocked the heck out of me!

On a another problem with Mylar Balloons, if you have a motion detector in your home as part of a security system, they will set off the detector & sound the alarm with their movement. I found out the hard way when I went to bed & the alarm went off. I since move the balloons to another room.

Im glad you posted about this. I had no idea. Plus, I just bought some to complete the large Easter basket I fill with eggs and prizes to hide for the hunt at my house. The ones I got are weighted.
Thats crazy to imagine that kind of money being made each month on these balloons. I have no idea why people would buy them from places other than a Dollar Store. I've seen gift shops want $5 and $10 for one balloon.

Plus, my cats are terrified of them.

@Tinkrbl44 Is the dollar store in a big city or small town? Maybe there are a ton of birthdays or conventions that need balloons? Either way, that's amazing that one dollar store makes that much money a month on balloons. I need to get into the balloon business! ![]()
