Rude or not rude? Please help!

A friend's nineteen year old granddaughter married her soldier boyfriend in August. Their baby is due early this month. My friend tells me the young woman is having a tough time financially.

My DH and I sent the new bride/mother a check the beginning of August. After a month she had not cashed it. Messaging her on FB, I asked her to "please cash it so we can balance our checkbook."

Another month has gone by and the check has still not been cashed. :-( When I messaged her again on FB, she responded, "sorry, I have been busy". (That made almost ten weeks of "busy")

THEN! Yesterday we received the check BACK between two pieces of plain paper (in an envelope, of course) with VOID written in HUGE RED letters over it.

We feel this is extremely RUDE on her part. Guess she didn't need the money after all.

Thoughts please?
