I guess I'm lucky, our post office employees are always helpful and courteous.

Mine too.  I frequent several different post offices, and have very rarely encountered anyone who was rude.  (And several of these are super-busy, heart-of-the-city locations.)

I deal with a lot worse customer service and far more rude & nasty people elsewhere.

The employees at my local post office are very helpful & pleasant. I only had a problem once a few years ago & I complained. The employee apologized & I haven’t had an issue since.

Was in the post office on Tuesday. There was a woman at the customer service desk asking the clerk ... how can I change my zipcode.  She technically lives in one town but her mailing address different. I too am in that situation. I live in one town, pay school taxes to another and property taxes to a different one and have a zip code that represents another.  So she didn't like the fact that her mailing address didn't reflect the 'town' she wanted or actually lived. She stood there for 5 minutes arguing with the man.  She finally said ... how can I get my zip code changed, he very calmly said .... you'll have to move.  There were 3 of us in line and we all had a hard time keeping the laughter bottled up.

The postal worker was actually very polite to her but she was unable to 'get it'.

@Helen852.  I have the same situation. My address for 35 years has a town and zip code where I do not live. It is my mailing address. If I want mail, that's how it goes. Frankly, I would rather live in the town of my mailing address than the one I actually live in  and pay taxes to.

I know several people in that situation.  Mailing address is sometimes different, and you're right  - That's how it goes.

I can't imagine complaining about this and insisting (at the post office, no less!) that their zip code be changed.  People need to educate themselves, and let post office employees do their jobs.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I live in a more rural community, and our PO employees are always pleasant.  We know most of their names and have seen them for years.  Perhaps that makes a difference.

Like someone said, there are rude folks everywhere.

I often go to various post offices in NYC, and have never been treated rudely, even when they're super-crowded.  I don't think it's so much a rural thing as it is what you said in your last sentence:  There are rude folks everywhere.  (And nice folks, everywhere too!)

I think it's clear from posts here (not just on this thread, but throughout all of the forums) that good/bad customer service happens in all different types of settings:  at the post office, with online retailers, etc.  Plenty of people have no problem at the post office while others do.  It's the same as all walks of life - Some people are rude, and others aren't.  I don't think post office workers are any more guilty than anyone else.

Re: Rude Post Office Employees

I lived in the big city most of my life. Just 3 years ago we moved and now live in a rural area. OMG what a difference! I am in shock at how nice people are here! I'm still pinching myself and in disbelief about how nice everyone is that I meet now.

I do usps shipping online and bypass the lines. As with most places there are some rude ones along with some gems.

Re: Rude Post Office Employees

I never go to my local post office. They are very rude. I use two smaller post offices in neighboring towns. Before I retired, the post office was right across the street from my job. I still didn't use it because of the rudeness. You can call or write to the postmaster with your complaint or go online and complain to the main post office in Washington D.C.  That's what I did. I wish more people would write letters about unacceptable treatment, no matter where it's at. Maybe then it would change.

As for the subtle jabs at unionized employees, no, it is not at all true that they cannot be fire. It's just that they are allowed a grievance process rather than being let go at will.

I'm not clear on your issue.

Is it rudeness or people who don't speak English well?

Maybe a little of both?

I just had a similar issue with USPS on Monday when I called to inquire about a missed pick up. I was disrespected by the woman that answered the phone. I wasted no time putting in a complaint online with USPS and with the postal inspector. I also informed the manager at the post office when I went in to drop off the packages they failed to pick up. I will not accept being disrespected by USPS period.

Someone called me yesterday from the post office to apologize and I received an email from opening a case online.

I'm an online seller and I depend on the post office. I pay for postage. It's not free. I demand to be treated with respect, for USPS to do their job well and provide the customer service I deserve. It may be a monopoly but it's completely unacceptable. I will not tolerate it and I will make sure management is aware of what is going on.

You may be a very nice person as others have stated, but your tone in just this post speaks volumes.
