“Royal” Question - About King Charles’ Coronation

I've read different opinions about this, so maybe you all can help me understand.

When Charles is crowned, Camilla will become Queen Consort. Upon Charles' passing William will become King. Charles has even said publicly he knows he is a "placeholder" for William!

A British citizen I was talking to said once the coronation is over Camilla will be the Queen. Should Charles die, she would have the right to declare herself in charge, and William would not become King until she said so.

I was surprised that so many others also thought this is what would happen.

I thought when Charles dies, William will become King. Camilla cannot be Queen Mother, as William is not her biological son. I thought her title would be Queen Dowager.

Am I right or wrong? I guess the 3/4 English DNA in me is curious! Smiley Wink

I would assume it would be William that would become King just like his Grandmother who became Queen when her father died and not her mother.

I don't believe Camilla will become queen, she isn't part of the royal lineage. William will become king upon Charle's death.

Re: “Royal” Question - About King Charles’ Coronatio

When Queen Elizabeth's father died, her mother, then Queen Elizabeth, because the Queen Mother, NOT the Queen.  Elizabeth was heir to the throne not her mother.  As William is heir to the throne, not Queen Camilla.

Re: “Royal” Question - About King Charles’ Coronation

I researched this a bit when Queen Elizabeth died. I found that Camilla's role is defined by her marriage. Her title is Queen Consort simply meaning the woman married to the King. She is not an heir to the throne. I do not follow the royals, but at the time I was interested in her position.

@beach-mom     You are correct. But I don't know if they still use the title Dowager Queen but that would be the title. but As King William could confer on her a new title. But she will never be queen or queen mother if Charles predeceases her.

Re: “Royal” Question - About King Charles’ Coronation

I do believe succession to the British throne is through the BLOODLINE not by marriage.  Therefore, Kate or Camilla will never become Queens of England if they survive their hubbies.

  • Wrong. The line of succession follows Charles' bloodline. William will be king when his father passes. Their wives be Queen Consorts. If Charles dies, Camilla will become the Dowager Queen and she'll be referred to as Queen Camilla. If William dies before Kate, she will be the Dowager Queen but will be referred to as Queen Catherine.

Re: “Royal” Question - About King Charles’ Coronation

It is amazing how many ways people interpret the line of succession to the throne! I thought it was pretty much established and a fact. Maybe having second marriages makes things not so clear.
