Sorry to read about this.  My aunt had such a crush on him.

Kildare was before my time but I remember watching Thorn Birds, Centennial and I’ve seen Musketeers. Such a good looking man.

I had a Dr. Kildare loose leaf binder in 4th grade. He was so handsome. I was allowed to stay up and watch the show but not Ben Casey as it was on at 10 pm.

it looks like it took him a very long time to come out of the closet, it was not easy in the 60's and 70's to do that. Probably happened right after The Thornbirds.

It was so competitive between Ben Casey and Kildare, many of the more mature women loved Casey better. They both came on the scene at the same time, 1961

Sad to hear. He was a very talented and handsome man.

 @Hoovermom    ETA I, too, had the "doctor " shirt in elementary school.  All the girls had one.  In retrospect, it must have been amusing for the teachers to look out on a sea of them.

I also have his LP.  The one with "Three Stars Will Shine Tonight".

I think he sang that song in his movie, Twilight of Honor

I was just thinking about that as I was reading these posts.  At the time the shows were airing I was in 9th grade.  I remember that my friends would prefer one over the other.

I watched and liked both, but I had more of a crush on Ben Casey.  He was darker in mood, more mysterious you might say. Dr Kildare was more boyish, more gentle in his manner.  When I was growing up, I usually tended to like the "bad boys" a little more.  Luckily, I grew up and grew out of that stage.

I did come to like Richard Chamberlain very much, I loved him in The Thorn Birds.

From all reports, he was a lovely man in real life.  Apparently he was kind and polite to everyone.

I hope he had a wonderful full life.  It sounds like he did.

I also had a crush on Dr. Kildare and had a loose leaf binder and lunch box with his pic on them.

@Shelbelle

My sister was smitten with both.

However, her first husband more closely resembled Vince Edwards.

Ben Casey - wow, he was always so tall, dark, handsome and moody! The conflict was always there...Ben Casey or Dr. Kildare!

Dark and brooding wins again.
