Worse idea than those old machines they had in public restrooms that were like cloth dish towels that hung down before disposable paper towels . It was back in the 60's .

We have had bidets since 2005ish. It cuts down drastically on TP, not to mention the obvious. When covid hit and people were stock piling toilet paper, we had plenty. Our first bidets were electric Toto's. Stupid expensive but we got a deal since we were buying three... one for Mom. We replaced them with non-electric warm/cold water bidets for a fraction of the cost and frankly, except for missing the warm toilet seat in the winter, I'm just as happy with them.

@Carmie - "In most of Europe..."? I lived in England for 20 years and traveled to other countries in Europe. I never once came across a place where that was done.
Admittedly, I traveled to places like Italy, Belgium, France, Switzerland, etc.
I have friends and family there who have traveled even more extensively than I did (including countries in Asia) and not one of them has ever mentioned anything like this.
But could you tell me what countries this happens in? In a wicker waste basket with no liner? How hygienic is that?

@Venezia The countries that I am sure you can't flush TP and must place it in an unlined wicker basket was found in Greece, Turkey, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and China.
Other European countries of France and Italy had lidded trash cans for TP. No flushing allowed and often squatty potties.
Often the toilets in Asia had no TP. You had to bring your own. In Bangkok, Thailand, they had attendants selling TP at public toilets and you also had to pay to use the toilets. No flushing paper allowed.
The worse toilet...dirty and with no paper at all was at the Ho Chi Mihn Mausolemun in Vietnam. I will spare you the details, but it was gross and I was having digestive issues.
Not a fun experience. I thought for sure I'd get a permanent disability from the unhygenic experience.
Hygienic, no. It's gross, but there is nothing you can do about it. It comes with travel to old historic places.
