Retired - but going back to work

Trying to build myself up to go back to work next week.  Only 8-10 hours a week, but it's just the idea of having to wake up at a certain time and get ready, get the dogs out for their walk, etc.  I've so enjoyed getting up when I want these last couple of years.  I really need to get around people again, I'm such a hermit.  I know it will be good for me, but......

Good luck.  Hope the first day goes so well you will look forward to going back on subsequent days!

@hoosieroriginal Good luck!  Since it is only 8-10 hours a week, you will still have a lot of freedom to do what you want, I would think.

Is it a couple of hours each day or do you work more hours a day for a couple or three days a week?

8-10 hours a week....lol   I think you can all that getting up early stuff...lol    It will be good for you, like many workers today, you probably retired just because you could, not because you really wanted too.  Try getting up early a few days before you begin the job, do a trial run to get accustomed to your schedule change.

Re: Retired - but going back to work

i am approaching retirement -  reluctantly.  i am looking for a part time something.  while i look forward to some relaxation,  i want to be part of something larger than myself. it may be in the non-profit sector  , it may be forwarding an issue, it may be helping others, it may be in the world of music/art -   something that arouses my passions.  it seems to me that peoples' worlds shrink anyway as they get older -   i am not ready for that.

Re: Retired - but going back to work

I feel your pain! I retired a year ago. I had two worries when I retired: would I have enough income to live comfortably, and would I get fat and lazy. The income is doable but the laziness has become a reality. I left a high paying job as a professional and always thought I would go back part time or per diem. Now there are days when I only leave the house to get the mail and I have never been more content! It scares me a little but I definitely do not want to go back to work. Good luck with your new job Hoosier! My lazy and ever growing behind will be home.

Re: Retired - but going back to work

I retired 3 years ago in June. I would NEVER  go back to work unless I absolutely had to do to finances or such. I value every minute of every day and would never waste a minute at a job I HAD TO BE AT AT A CERTAIN TIME OR PLACE again.

I cherish these days of long dog walks.... eating my meals relaxed and at whatever time I choose... going to bed  when I want and getting up when I want...  wearing what I want and not having to please anyone BUT MYSELF.  Just doing what makes ME happy. Even if that is nothing at all!

I have never needed people to be around me to be happier.  Maybe that is where we differ. I have had girlfriends that just never could enjoy their own quiet time and were always needing people. That is not me.  Call me a hermit if you will. A happy hermit! Smiley Happy

I'm going back to work at the job I left to retire.  It will only be a couple days a week, so I think I can handle it.  I feel I'm getting lazy too, especially in the winter months.

Re: Retired - but going back to work

@hoosieroriginal  Ha!  Getting up early (really early) is the part I still hate about working.  At 67, I still work full-time because I need the interaction and I like to work, but when that clock goes off, and it's still dark outside......yukk! At 8-10 hrs/wk, I hope it's only a couple days, not 5 like me.  If I didn't work, I think I'd become a lazy_ _ _, but the ideal for me would be 3-4 days/wk, maybe 20-30 hours.  Wish I could have it that way!

@SeaMaiden - I said I would never go back either.  And yes, like you I am a total hermit, but I don't think it's healthy for me.  I have my dogs, but I really miss having some "people" conversation.
