Did they vacate the store? Is the lease up?

If not the rent is due.

@CelticCrafter Have you ever run your own business out of a rented or owned space?

What has that got to do with anything?

You rent a space you owe the rent.  If the landlord has a heart he will work with the tenant but to threaten not to pay the rent wouldn't get you very far.

@CelticCrafter

The types of landlords that rent to huge multi-location retailers don't have "hearts".

They have loans and debt to pay off and a lot of square-footage that needs tenants.

If they are inclined to be kind to a tenant, it's only because they are looking at the dollars they would lose without that tenant.

[ Edited ]

we have a "upscale" shopping center near us that has "upscaled" its rent so much that most tenants are moving to other places where the rent is in our own stratosphere. What is happening now with COVID 19 should really let landlords know what is realistic for tenants when this is over

@CelticCrafter So that would be a big fat NO that you have not run your own business. It takes a lot of hard work and guts to run a business on your own. Sure the rent/mortgage is due. No one is denying that. But if all your business was wiped out due to the virus from China, through no fault of your own, your income stream will disappear. Most small businesses struggle as it is. You think they have huge cash reserves? A little empathy is needed here.
