Re: Retail Bankruptcies Are at All-Time High

Not surprising. My 30 year old son has not shopped in a retail store in years. He will buy everything but food on line. And food he just stops at Baja Fresh, SaladWorks or the restaurant and pick up his order. Everything else he orders on line.

The other day after we took our dog for a walk, my husband ran into a local deli for sandwiches for lunch. Since we had the dog, I stayed with the dog in the car. In the less than 5 minutes that I was sitting there in the car, I noticed 3 white home delivery vans pass by and a large and small Fed Ex truck. And that was one intersection.

With everyone clicking and ordering. It is not hard to understand that retail businesses are disappearing. I worked in a retail store for 6+ years. And it was shocking how much product had to be thrown away, or stolen, or people returning clothes that were worn. People ripped open packages to check out the item and throw it back on the shelf. Can't sell it - if you are lucky donate it or throw it out. Any clothing that was worn. Can't sell it - throw it out. And the stories I could tell about shoplifters. The store I used to work for is closing many of it's stores. I am surprised they didn't close more sooner.

I don’t eee pet smart filing for bankruptcy. That would really suck if we could only get chloes food on chewy.

@handygal2Your article more or less backs up something I read yesterday which predicted 30 to 50% of the current kinds of retail jobs will disappear over the next 2 decades if not sooner.

Remember that old song "Mama, Don't Let Your Kids Grow Up to Be Cowboys?"   I think we could just substitute retailers in that title.

I don't think anyone finds that surprising at this state.  We're living in a transition period now but it's definitely the end of of old style brick&mortar shopping as we've always known it.  I 90% of my shopping online now.  You couldn't pay me to go into a mall unless it's to buy a specialty item that is not available online or to go to a restaurant.  And yet, I still shop with some  favorite retailers.  I still buy from Chicos and Macy's and Lord&Taylor.  I just do it online.

It's sad people losing jobs, and consumers losing choices of where they can shop....

And it would be bad if PetsMart closed some of their stores because they do so much to help with animal adoption and animal shelters........Cat Sad

Very interesting... I wonder how much the CEO’s & others at the top are making in salaries & benefits. It’s hard for companies to absorb multi-million dollar salaries & benefits. Remember the “golden parachutes” a few years back. It seems the few at the top just care about getting as much as they can for themselves & then file bankruptcy.

Do they ever go after them personally? If they approve a multimillion $ bonus for themselves isn’t that like bouncing a check? Taking money you know you don’t have? Seems like they should have to pay it back & be personally responsible for some of the company’s debt.

While a bad CEO can cost a company dearly, a good CEO is worth every penny.  They have a supremely unique skill set that is far above their average worker.  There was a female VP who took her division from 7 billion a year to 23 billion, and you can't say she wouldn't be worth a massive salary.

As as for a bad exec, their salary most likely couldn't save a company.

Add me to the list of "not surprised". Visit any mall in my area for evidence of that fact. I think many could turn things around with the right person at the helm and a vision that resonates with current market trends and needs.

Sears just closed their doors here. Strangely enough , Guitar Center and a grocery store are going into it’s space.

J. Crew, Neimans, Fresh Market = over priced market. They can only maintain those prices for a select market.

Sears has been in a death spiral for years.

I cannot comment on the other retailers since I have never been in them.

@handygal2,

Thank you so much for your post. My only option was to shop on line and I love NM the fact that now we also have to pay taxes in CT is not helping this company at all🌻
