Re: Restaurant Quality and additional fees

Since they are a franchise, I think quality varies from Subway to Subway.

We do eat out quite a bit. Overall portions are smaller, quality less & prices are higher. We tend to go to our favorite diner a lot. We save the more expensive places for occasions.Local restaurants also have good dinner specials.

We like the diner because the portions are pretty decent & we usually have enough leftovers for a second meal. That makes up for the higher price. In addition we get a senior discount. The same is true for local restaurants.

I got a $150 gift card for Panera for my birthday a few months ago. We hadn't been there in a while & were surprised at how expensive it was. We blew through the gift card in less than 4 visits. The soup bowls were smaller & so were the sandwiches .

Food at the supermarket is also more expensive.

@LTT1 - I don't tip at places like that, where you order at the counter, pick it up, get your own cutlery, etc. and pick up after yourself.

And, if the bread was dry, I'd take the sandwiches back and ask them to remake them.  (I know it was likely difficult for you with your grandchildren.)

No excuse for that.  BTW, what happened to "the $5 foot-long" that they used to advertise? I haven't been in Subway for years.

Mininum wage was half what it is now when $5 footlongs were a thing

We used to eat out 2 or 3 times a week and would usually come home with enough leftovers for the next day.  It was easy to justify the expense but that's just not the case anymore.

Re: Restaurant Quality and additional fees

We don't eat out often.  McDonald's, Burger King, etc. is only once or twice a year.  No more coupons in the mail.  It's all about the APP.  In the APP's you get the promo's/deals.  There was a a lot of media press when the  prices of fast food restaurants were climbing.  Some stopped going.  I notices that McDonald's, BK and Wendy's advertise their $5 meals often now.  My BIL and his girlfriend visit us last week.  They went to a new brunch spot and for the two of them it was over $50 (not including tip).  I'm not willing to pay what restaurants charge.  I'm always thinking how much groceries that would be instead.

P.S.  Haven't seen additional restaurant fees lately but about 10 years ago I remember seeing an additional fee from McDonald's for an "eat in dining room fee."

Re: Restaurant Quality and additional fees

I bought a copycat recipe book years ago that had Paneras broccoli cheese soup listed.  I make my own and it is just as good if not better.

The last time I had theirs, it had sat in the pot and tasted scorched.  I can control the sodium too.

@ScrapHappy

That's so true about the App!  I don't order through an App.  Don't like the idea of having to download every single fast food place's App on my phone either.

Me either.  My husband does the APP thing.  And, many times, you have to pay by credit card when using the APP.  I don't like doing that either.

Re: Restaurant Quality and additional fees

We stopped eating out during the Pandemic and never looked back.

We will do a "Curbside Pickup" once in a while from Olive Garden, Outback or Texas Roadhouse.

I also get a ton of coupons for Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Popeye's and Bojangles...

So, unless we have a coupon, I'd rather save that $$$$ and cook (low-salt, no preservatives) nutritious food at home Smiley Wink

Re: Restaurant Quality and additional fees

Found Subway not worth the price  due to just a single slice of meat and cheese on a big  piece of bread .

Best to go to Chick -Fil-A where atleast the sandwiches or  grilled chicken or salads are filling .
